Tulsa Takes First Win of the Season Over Wyoming
TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa women's tennis team began the 2025 spring season Saturday morning with a 6-1 victory over the University of Wyoming Cowgirls at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Tulsa took an early 1-0 lead over the Cowgirls by capturing the doubles point with wins at all spots with victories by No. 26th-ranked senior pair Maria Berlanga and Lily Hutchings in a 6-1 decision and Ana Naranjo and Mariana Velasquez in a tight 7-5 score, respectively. Erin McKenzie and Tayla Wilmot also took a win by a 6-1 decision.
In singles play, all six Tulsa players earned straight-set victories. The No. 1-3 positions were on the court first as Tulsa added to the doubles point with three victories for a 4-0 lead. At No 2, Lily Hutchings swept over her opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia.
Maria Berlanga and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez took wins at the No 1 and 3 slots. Berlanga grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 win while Velasquez took a 6-2, 6-2 win to score for TU. Sophomores Erin Mckenzie and Saniya Singh at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively, captured wins over their Wyoming singles opponents with Mckenzie taking both sets 7-5, 6-4 while Singh prevailed 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Tayla Wilmot battled in three sets with Ruby Young of Wyoming but fell short in a long 4-6, 6-4, 0-1(7-10) score in the No. 4 position.
The four-team, two-day Hurricane Invite will continue Sunday as Tulsa will finish the event with the doubles portion of the Arkansas State match at 9 a.m. and follow with the full LA Tech match.
