WICHITA, Kan. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team was careless with the basketball, and the Wichita State Shockers took advantage as the Golden Hurricane fell 79-63 at Charles Koch Arena on Wednesday night.
Where the Hurricane (13-13, 4-10 The American) turned it over just five times in the overtime win over Rice, Tulsa turned it over a season-high 22 times against the Shockers (11-16, 3-11 The American), leading to 29 points for the hosts. Tulsa suffered 13 first half turnovers, which allowed Wichita State to score 17 points and build a sizable lead.
PJ Haggerty continued to be Tulsa's leading scorer with 24 points alongside seven rebounds, two assists and four steals. Tyshawn Archie joined Haggerty in double figures, scoring 14 points in addition to an assist and two steals. Isaiah Barnes added 10 points and had three steals. Colby Rogers and Kenny Pohto paced the Shockers on offense with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
Tulsa didn't shoot poorly, hitting 43 percent of its shots from the floor, while the Shockers shot 48 percent for the game. Neither team shot well from 3-point range, with Tulsa finishing 2-of-20 from long range and Wichita State hitting on 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) attempts.
Wichita State was able to pull ahead midway through the first half, taking a 43-26 lead into the break. Tulsa opened the second half and immediately got the lead down to 13, 43-30, with 19 minutes to play. However, the Hurricane couldn't keep the run going and pushed the lead over 20 with 13:50 to play. From there, the lead stayed at 18 or above until late in the ballgame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
Carlous Williams got Tulsa on the board with a thunderous dunk to even the score in the opening two minutes. The Hurricane led twice in the early going, first with a Jared Garcia 3-pointer to go up 5-4 and then again moments later on a Haggerty layup to give TU a 7-6 advantage with 16:49 remaining in the half.
After the Shockers took the lead, Tulsa would tie the game at 14 with a Tyshawn Archie 3-pointer, and then 16 on a Haggerty jumper with 9:35 on the clock. That would be the last time in the game Wichita State didn't lead. WSU went on a 9-0 run to jump ahead 25-16 with 7:42 to play in the half.
Haggerty went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 29-25 at the 4:55 mark, but again Wichita State scored nine straight, pushing its lead to 38-25 with 1:50 to play in the stanza. The Shockers continued its run, outscoring Tulsa 14-1 in the final 4:55 of play to go into the break leading 43-26.
IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
Tulsa opened the second half with four straight points to cut the deficit to 13. But Wichita State responded just as quickly with four straight, part of a 14-2 run to the lead to 25. Haggerty drew an old-fashioned 3-point play off a Barnes steal to put an end to the run with 12:06 to play and the Shockers leading 57-35.
From then on, the Shockers just needed to stifle any opportunities of a Tulsa run, and they did just that. TU couldn't get the lead under 18 until a pair of Jesaiah McWright free throws with 2:49 remaining. Two free throws from Tyshawn Archie with a little less than a minute to play ended the scoring.
