Tulsa Women Open Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Against No. 24 Illinois
2/22/2024 3:09:00 PM | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's tennis team is set to compete in the 76th Annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24. It's the second consecutive year Tulsa has competed in the tournament and third under Head Coach Dean Orford (2017, 2023, 2024).
The annual Division I tournament showcases 16 men's and women's teams from across the country. Unique to the event, athletes and coaches are offered southern hospitality as Montgomery residents open their doors and serve as hosts for the visiting teams.
The Golden Hurricane opens the tournament at 9 a.m. Friday against No. 24 Illinois, Tulsa's first ranked opponent of the season. A win against the Fighting Illini would move Tulsa to the semi-final round, where the Hurricane would face either No. 36 Alabama or No. 43 Arizona. Consolation rounds are offered for teams who fall in the first round.
Friday marks the first-ever meeting between Tulsa and Illinois.
Illinois does not feature any ranked singles or doubles tandems in the latest ITA polls (Feb. 20). In singles play, two players have one ranked win so far this spring, including Megan Heuser, who's 5-1 at the top of the lineup, and Kida Ferrari, who's currently 5-1 across positions four and six.
The Illini are finding success in doubles action as two duos are undefeated through the first month of dual-match competition. Josie Frazier and Kate Duong are 3-0 in the No. 2 position, while Alice Xu and Megan Heuser are 4-0 across all three doubles spots.
