SAN ANTONIO, Texas –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball couldn't keep up with UTSA's 3-point shooting as the Golden Hurricane fell 89-73 at the Convocation Center on Wednesday evening.
The Hurricane (14-14, 5-11 The American) connected on five 3-pointers while shooting 23.8 percent from beyond the arc, but the Roadrunners (10-19, 4-12 The American) knocked down 14 long balls at a 42.4 percent clip, including 11 in the opening half. It was the main difference in a game where both teams shot 44.4 percent from the floor and Tulsa made 20 free throws to UTSA's 19.
Freshman PJ Haggerty picked up the second double-double of his career, scoring a game-high 29 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He dished out his 100th assist of the season in the loss, becoming the first Tulsa freshman to reach that mark. Jesaiah McWright was the other Hurricane to reach double figures, scoring 10 points, all in the second half.
UTSA took the lead early with a pair of free throws at the 18:19 mark to go up 3-2, and the Roadrunners didn't look back. The lead would get pushed to 10 with 11:43 to play in the opening half and never got below that mark from then on.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
Neither team came out shooting well from the field, with all the points coming off free throws until a UTSA 3-pointer a little more than three minutes into the game. The Roadrunners knocked down another 3-pointer after a steal, part of a quick 8-0 run to go up 9-2 and force a timeout.
Haggerty got to the hoop Tulsa's first field goal of the game, but the Roadrunners immediately responded with another three. Haggerty got a steal and layup, followed by another TU fastbreak off a miss, resulting in a McWright to Tyshawn Archie ally-oop to get within four, 12-8 at the 14:15 mark.
The hosts started to heat up from long range, knocking down four over the next five minutes to get the lead to 15, 29-14 with 9:17 remaining. At the 6:34 mark, Isaiah Barnes got to the hole for a layup, cutting the deficit to 10 and forcing a UTSA timeout. But the Roadrunners regrouped and went on a quick 10-0 run over the ensuing 1:45 of game time to go ahead 42-22 before a Jared Garcia triple ended the run. Back-to-back 3-pointers kickstarted the run as Tulsa turned it over on three straight possessions.
UTSA didn't slow down once hitting 20, continuing to shoot well from 3-point range and taking advantage of TU turnovers, pushing the lead to a half-high 27 points, 53-26, with 1:56 on the clock.
Haggerty answered with a 3-pointer of his own to help Tulsa end the half on an 8-0 run to go into the break down 53-34. Archie closed the scoring with a 3-pointer off the dribble with seven seconds left in the opening stanza.
Both teams shot 46 percent from the field in the half, but UTSA buried Tulsa in a barrage of 3-pointers, hitting 11 to Tulsa's three. Haggerty led Tulsa with 14 points, while Archie added seven.
IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
The Hurricane cut the lead to 15 early in the second half but was unable to take advantage of some empty UTSA possessions and get the score tighter. A layup at the 17:31 mark was the first bucket of the second half for the Roadrunners. After a Tulsa turnover, UTSA was good from three and the lead was back at 20, 59-39.
For almost the next 10 minutes, the lead hovered around the 20-point mark, going as high as 24 and as low as 19. A 5-0 UTSA run ending with 8:56 in the game helped the Roadrunners take their largest lead, 76-50. Tulsa then rattled off eight of their own, fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from McWright.
Neither team would make much of a run the remainder of the way, as Tulsa outscored UTSA 15-13 down the stretch to get to the 89-73 final. Haggerty scored 15 points in the second and McWright had all 10 of his points in the period. Again the teams were even from the floor, with both teams hitting 42.9 percent on second half field goals.
