Tulsa Men Take Down Temple for 72-67 Road Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –– Tulsa led nearly all 40 minutes to claim a 72-67 road win against the Temple Owls Saturday afternoon in front of 3,213 fans at the Liacouras Center.
 
Tulsa improved to 15-14 overall and 6-11 in American Athletic Conference play, while Temple fell to 11-18 and 4-12.
 
Cobe Williams and PJ Haggerty each scored 21 points and Jared Garcia added 14 as the Hurricane knocked down 48-percent of its field goals and 44-percent from the three-point range. Williams finished the game 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from behind the arc, while dishing out seven assists and five rebounds.

The free throw line made a difference in this game as the Hurricane hit 12-of-16 from the charity stripe for 75 percent while the Owls made just 50-percent on 11-of-22 free throws.
 
Tulsa built a 16-point lead in the first half and held on for a nine-point halftime lead at 32-23 as Williams was led the way with 13 first-half points. The Hurricane kept its double-digit lead for most of the first eight minutes of the second half and was able to respond to Temple's baskets in the final 12 minutes.
 
Temple got as close as one point when Steve Settle's long three-pointer made cut the Hurricane lead to one points at 68-67 game with 0:30 remaining. Tulsa's Haggerty made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 0:19 to preserve the 72-67 victory and give the Hurricane its second road win of the season.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
After Temple scored the first two points Tulsa went on a 11-0 run with Cobe Williams scoring seven of those for the Hurricane.
 
The Tulsa run continued to 16-2 over a 6:01 span.
 
Tulsa shot 67% in the early going (6-of-9) and holding the host Owls to 17% on 2-of-12 from the field.
 
Tulsa took its first double-digit lead of 10 points, 14-4, at the 12:10 mark of the period and built that to as many as 13 points on a Carlous Williams trey with 7:14 remaining.
 
Temple cut Tulsa's 13-point lead to five on an 8-0 run as the Hurricane made one of its last nine field goals and were scoreless for 3:39.
 
Cobe Williams ended Tulsa's drought with a three-pointer at the 3:23 mark and he followed with another trey for an 11-point lead.
 
Jared Garcia knocked down a trey for a 14-point Tulsa lead at 32-18.
 
Temple ended the first 20 minutes by scoring the final five points of the half to trim the Tulsa halftime lead to nine, 32-23.
 

IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
The Hurricane scored the first four points to take a 36-23 lead.
 
After that, the teams exchanged baskets as Tulsa held a 16-13 scoring edge through the first media timeout at the 12:18 mark.
 
Tulsa had its last double-digit lead of 10 points at the 12:04 mark.
 
Temple got as close as one point when Steve Settle's long-range bomb made it 68-67 game with 0:30 remaining.
 
PJ Haggerty made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 0:19 to preserve the 72-67 victory.

• Tulsa improved to 15-14 overall on the season and 6-11 in AAC games.
• The road win was the second of the year for Tulsa improving the Hurricane road mark to 2-9.
• With its 15 wins on the season, Tulsa has improved 10 wins overall and five more AAC wins from a year ago with one regular season game remaining.
• Tulsa led at halftime for the 14th time this season and for the first time in the last seven games (one tie, 5 times trailing).

• Junior Jared Garcia had his 11th double-figure scoring game of the year with 14 points.
• Tulsa is 10-1 when Garcia scores 10 or more points.
• Tulsa basketball – men and women – went 2-0 in Philadelphia this week as the Golden Hurricane women defeated the first-place Owls on Wednesday.
 
 
Tulsa will close out the regular season next Saturday at home against the American's first-place South Florida Bulls. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
