HOUSTON, Texas — Following a tough loss to No. 31 Columbia on Sunday, the Tulsa women's tennis team ended its two-match trip in Houston with a 6-1 loss Tuesday to fellow American Athletic Conference member Rice at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 8-9 overall while the Owls improved to 6-8.
Â
The Owls took control early in doubles play, winning the first and second positions by scores of 6-1 and 6-3, respectively, to earn the 1-0 advantage over the Hurricane. Fifth-year senior Oleksandra Nahurska and junior Ana Naranjo Martinez left their match unfinished at 5-3 in the No. 3 slot.
Â
Tulsa opened singles play with a strong two-set victory from true freshman Saniya Singh in the No. 6 position. Singh brought down Anushka Ashar in consecutive 6-2 sets to even up the dual match at 1-1. Singh improves to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in duals with wins in seven of her last 10 completed matches.
Â
The momentum was short-lived as Rice would capture wins in Nos. 1-5 to run away with a 6-1 dual-match decision. Three singles matches were decided in straight sets while Nahurska and freshman Tayla Wilmot each forced a third set in the second and fifth positions but were unable to come out on top in their respective final frames.
Â
The Tulsa women will return to action on Saturday, March 30, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center when the Hurricane takes on No. 43 SMU (7-8) at 11 a.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
