Tulsa Women to Host North Texas, Temple for Regular Season Finale

4/11/2024 5:08:00 PM | Women's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. — Coming off a strong 4-1 victory Monday over then-63rd-ranked Wichita State and looking to end the regular season on a high note, the Tulsa women's tennis squad (9-11) will host North Texas (10-11) and Temple for a pair of American Athletic Conference duals at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The Golden Hurricane will face the Mean Green Friday, April 12, in a 5:30 p.m. match that'll concurrently with the men's tennis team's match with Lindenwood that begins at 6 p.m. The Tulsa women follow with a Sunday showdown against the Owls at noon, where TU will be doing an ice cream giveaway for all fans who attend the match.

This is the 19th overall meeting between the Hurricane and North Texas and the ninth meeting in Tulsa in a series that dates back to the 1989 season. Tulsa is undefeated against the Mean Green with a perfect 18-0 record and an 8-0 home record.

The Mean Green are 10-11 on the year and 2-4 on the road. Last time out, North Texas earned a 7-0 sweep over Tyler Junior College before falling to Tulane in New Orleans, 4-1.

Three UNT players lead the way with nine singles wins this season, including Lou Chalard (9-6), Carolina Laydner (9-3) and Stadfany Nformi (9-7), who is on a three-match win streak entering Friday's match. Nformi and teammate Olivia Halvorsen form the Mean Green's top doubles tandem with an 8-3 overall record and a 6-3 mark at No. 1 Doubles.

Sunday marks just the fifth meeting between Tulsa and Temple and the first matchup since 2022. The Hurricane is 4-0 against the Owls with all matches having been played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The Owls are 9-5 this year but 0-5 in road matches. Last time out, Temple cruised to a 6-1 victory at home over Hampton.

Marianthi Christoforidou paces the Owls in singles play with a 14-11 overall record and a 6-4 mark in dual matches in the Nos. 4-6 positions. In doubles play, Maiko Uchijima and Samantha Nanere form the nation's 47th-ranked tandem for Temple, while Evie Wei and Jessie Zheng lead the way with a 14-3 overall mark and a perfect 8-0 record this spring.

With a team-leading 19-9 singles record, junior Maria Berlanga Bandera needs just one more win to set a new season-high of 20 singles wins. The spaniard has produced 18 or more singles victories in all three years at Tulsa. Meanwhile, junior Lily Hutchings has 46 career singles wins and 53 doubles wins for 99 total victories in her career, needing just one more to surpass the century mark at TU.
