TULSA, Okla. — The fifth-seeded Tulsa men's tennis team welcomed the 12-seed Wichita State Shockers for a rematch in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship and came out on top in a decisive 4-1 decision on the outdoor courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Golden Hurricane earned their ninth win in their last 10 dual matches to improve to 15-12 while the Shockers end their season at 5-18.
Â
Tulsa will face No. 4 seed Rice (16-7) in the quarterfinal round Friday at 2 p.m.
Â
It was a battle in doubles play Thursday as two of the three matches ended with seven-point tiebreaker sets at six games all. The doubles point came down to the No. 2 position following a 6-2 triumph by No. 41 Pierce Rollins and Timothy Carlsson Seger atop the lineup and a 7-6 (7-3) finish by the Shockers in the third position. Callum Gale and Gus Tettamble withstood Vanja Hodzic and Marcelo Sepulveda through five tie scores before reaching the tiebreak stanza. The Shocker pair broke a 3-3 deadlock and rode the momentum from there to a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker to seal the 1-0 advantage over the Hurricane.
Â
Tulsa retaliated in singles action with four strong straight-set victories in the Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 6 positions.
Â
Freshman Victor Tosetto was the first to finish for the Hurricane as the Brazilian cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 finish over Richey King in the sixth line. Tosetto allowed King to reach 40 in only three games on the way to giving Tulsa its first team point of the day. Tosetto also became the first player on the roster to reach 16 total wins this school year.
Â
Joining Tosetto in the 16-win club was Seger with a 6-4, 6-1 winner in the fifth position against Luke Bracks. After Seger broke the tie at 4-4, he rattled off six straight game wins to take a 4-0 lead in the second set and used that advantage to close out and secure the lead for the Hurricane.
Â
Up 2-1, Tulsa tallied two more singles wins from senior Volodymyr Zakharov and Rollins and in the fourth and first positions, respectively. Zakharov outpaced Hodzic 6-2, 6-3 to claim the four-slot, and Rollins clinched the dual match for Tulsa in a 6-3, 6-4 final result over Misha Kvantaliani. Seniors Thiago Pernas and Callum Gale left their matches unfinished in the second and third spots.
