WICHITA, KAN. — The Tulsa women's tennis team got back in the win column Monday with their first ranked win of the season in a 4-1 team victory over the No. 63 Wichita State Shockers at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita. The Golden Hurricane rose to 9-11 on the year and handed the Shockers their fourth consecutive loss to fall to 10-8 overall.
Though Wichita State started doubles action with a one-position advantage from a 6-1 decision in the No. 3 spot, the Hurricane would grab 6-3 wins in the top two positions to win the opening doubles point, clinched by fifth-year senior Oleksandra Nahurska and junior Ana Naranjo Martinez in the second position in just their third match together this year.
Tulsa and Wichita State exchanged straight-set wins to open singles play as the Shockers put away the No. 1 position 6-4, 6-2, and TU grabbed a 6-4, 7-5 win from Nahurska for the second spot to make it a 2-1 dual match in favor of the Hurricane. Nahurska's win improved Lugunsk, Ukraine, native to 16-10 overall in singles action.
Freshman Tayla Wilmot enjoyed a three-set bounce-back win at the bottom of the lineup to put Tulsa up 3-1 on the Shockers. After dropping a worrisome opening set 6-0, the South African earned 7-5 and 6-2 victories over Wichita State's Giorgia Roselli to improve to 7-5 this season.
Clinching the 4-1 win and ending the day's action was Naranjo against Kristi Kudryavtseva in a back-and-forth match that went the distance in the fourth position. Naranjo opened the match with a 7-6 finish in the first stanza resulting from an 8-6 tiebreaker set. Kudryavtseva would claim the second set 7-5 before Naranjo went full steam ahead to win 6-2 in the third frame to garner her 15th overall singles win and her 10th dual-match singles victory.
The Tulsa women will return home to wrap up the regular season at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center against North Texas (10-11) Friday, April 12, at 5:30 p.m., and Temple (9-5) Sunday, April 14, at noon.
