Women's Soccer Shuts Out UTSA 2-0

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (8-4-5, 3-2-3) secured a 2-0 victory over UTSA (7-3-5, 3-1-3) at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium, with Tulsa's goalkeeper contributing four saves to keep a clean sheet. This marked only the eighth and ninth goals given up by UTSA this year, and it was their second loss by more than one goal for the season.
Tulsa started the match with Tatum Sanders in goal, while Jasmine Kessler guarded the net for UTSA. The home team initially applied pressure as Kaylyn Simmons's shot was saved by Kessler in the third minute. Maggie SymSmith opened the scoring for Tulsa in the 20th minute, assisted by Simmons. SymSmith's goal was her third of the season and the seventh of her career, marking the second game-winner of her career. The lead was extended in the 34th minute when Hannah Chance, aided by assists from Addison Castleberry and Natalie Hernandez, found the back of the net. Hernandez's assist was her fourth of the season. Despite UTSA's attempts, including a saved shot by Izzy Lane in the 27th minute, the Golden Hurricane maintained their 2-0 advantage by halftime.
Tulsa and the Roadrunners resumed play in the second half with the Golden Hurricane maintaining a 2-0 lead. Tulsa pressed forward with several shot attempts. Notably, Jordan Frederick's 54th-minute shot was saved by UTSA's Jasmine Kessler, who continued to be a defensive cornerstone, saving multiple attempts, including those by Blaine Schutte and Aniya Facen. UTSA's Ava Jackson and Zoë May both had chances to narrow the gap, but Sanders made crucial saves, preserving the shutout. The half concluded without any additional scoring, with Tulsa holding their advantage.
"I give all the credit to [the team], we just finally put the pieces together. We know we can play like this and we showed it today." Sanders also noted, "I think we're gelling as a team right now. We know we need these points and people are stepping up." Sanders' performance included her second shutout of the season and the 12th of her career.
Tulsa holds a record of 8-4-5 overall and 3-2-3 in conference play. UTSA stands at 7-3-5 overall with a 3-1-3 conference record.
The next challenge for the Golden Hurricane will see them traveling to Charlotte, N.C., where they will face Charlotte on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CT, as Tulsa looks to secure a victory on the road.
