Tulsa Drops 3-1 Decision to North Texas

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa (17-4, 7-2 American) fell to North Texas (16-5, 6-3 American) in a four-set match on Friday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, with set scores of 22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 16-25.
The Golden Hurricane recorded a total of 10 blocks in the match but was out-killed 58-43 and hit for .128 on the night. The loss snaps a six-match win streak for Tulsa, who look to bounce back against UTSA on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The first set between Tulsa and North Texas began with a tight exchange of points, as Reagan Bedell contributed a kill for North Texas to open the scoring. Tulsa responded with strong play from Lauren Eitler, who secured two early kills, helping maintain a narrow lead at 9-6. However, the Mean Green gained momentum through a series of kills from Lilly Croshaw and Ryann Vik, eventually tying the score at 14-14. A service ace by Bedell pushed North Texas ahead, and they extended their lead with a series of kills and errors by Tulsa. Despite a late push by the Golden Hurricane, highlighted by kills from Jill Hanson and Kat Cooper, North Texas closed the set at 25-22 following a Tulsa service error.
North Texas secured the second set with a 25-19 victory over Tulsa, capitalizing on a series of key plays and errors by the home team. Tulsa initially led 4-1 with kills by Beth Bayless and Maegan Mills, both assisted by Brayden Hipp. However, North Texas shifted momentum with a 6-0 run, featuring two service aces by Alexa Washington, moving ahead 6-4. Jahniya Jackson was instrumental in extending the Mean Green's lead with three consecutive kills, making the score 11-6. Despite Tulsa's attempts to rally with a kill from Hanson and a block by Mills and Cooper, North Texas maintained control. Bedell's decisive kill from an assist by Sidney Soria sealed the set for North Texas at 25-19.

Bedell began the set by putting the Mean Green ahead with two early kills, contributing to a 3-0 lead. The Golden Hurricane responded with a strong showing, as Hanson and Kylee McCoy delivered key kills to level the score at 3-3. Tulsa took control midway through the set with a series of attacks, including a pivotal block by Cooper that pushed their lead to 6-4. Eitler was instrumental in maintaining Tulsa's momentum, registering several kills, including three consecutive points that extended their advantage to 23-17. Hipp sealed the set for Tulsa with a kill, finalizing the score at 25-18.
North Texas started the fourth set with a commanding 6-0 run, highlighted by Bedell's two kills and an ace from the team. Tulsa attempted to narrow the gap with a block by Mills and a kill by Cooper, bringing the score to 9-7. However, the Mean Green quickly extended their lead with contributions from Croshaw and Loredana Fouonji, pushing the score to 18-10. Despite a brief Tulsa rally bringing the score to 22-15, North Texas maintained control, with Jackson scoring the final point off a Tulsa attack error, sealing the set at 25-16 and the match victory.
TU's next game will take place against UTSA at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, in the Reynolds Center.
