TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa improved to 3-0 for the third time in the last five years after defeating Houston Christian (0-3) 75-67 Thursday night in the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane iced the game with a decisive 29-point fourth quarter, capitalizing on 41 points off turnovers throughout the night.
"I'm super proud of our team," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "The fight and the grit that we showed and the toughness that we had throughout that whole game, especially down the stretch in the fourth quarter I think it was really key. I loved our fourth quarter pressure that we were able to have. I felt like that was a really big difference for us, being able to kind of put some pressure. That was kind of a turning point for us there in the fourth quarter. Offensively, I loved our balanced attack. I feel like we have a team that has a lot of versatility and different scoring options, and it's really fun to see that balance on our team."
Tulsa's defense would force 34 turnovers on the night, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter.
"I think it was a slow start, but once we started allowing us to set the tone and the pace for our game and our offense, I felt like we got into a good flow and we started getting the looks that we were wanting," said freshman guard Alisha Peavy.
Peavy was one of four double-figure scorers for the Golden Hurricane on Thursday, finishing with 11 points for her first career game in double-digit territory. She also led TU with four assists, tying her freshman teammate Dora Toman.
Junior Mady Cartwright's 12 second-half points helped her finish with a team-high 15 points. Joining her in double-digit scoring were Peavy (11), Toman (10) and redshirt senior Hannah Riddick, who put up 12 points in her first game back exactly one year removed from a season-ending injury while playing for Memphis on November 13, 2024.
Toman led TU with seven rebounds, while Cartwright boosted the defense with three steals.
The opening quarter between the Golden Hurricane and the Huskies was closely contested, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. HCU's Jordan Jackson scored early with a jumper at 9:20, putting her team ahead momentarily. Tulsa responded with a series of free throws and a fast-break 3-pointer by Haven Fisher at 1:45, assisted by Dora Toman, to regain the lead. Abby Jegede contributed a layup in the final minute, extending the Golden Hurricane's advantage to 15-12. Despite a late fast-break layup by Grace Booth for the Huskies, Tulsa maintained their three-point lead at the end of the quarter.
Tulsa extended its lead in the second quarter, outscoring Houston Christian 15-11. Hannah Riddick scored early with a layup at 9:36, assisted by Toman, setting the tone for the Golden Hurricane. Layla-J Cameron added to the momentum with a 3-pointer at 8:16, facilitated by Mady Cartwright. Booth kept the Huskies competitive, contributing a 3-pointer at 7:51. However, Alisha Peavy's fast-break layup at the buzzer capped the quarter, giving Tulsa a 30-23 advantage at halftime.
The Huskies took control in the third quarter, overcoming an early deficit with a series of successful plays. Booth scored a jumper at 9:22, and Madelyne Davis added a 3-pointer at 8:12, contributing to a 29-16 run over the Golden Hurricane in the quarter. Jackson's 3-pointer at 6:48 put Houston Christian ahead, while Davis continued her strong performance with another three at 1:02, giving them a three-point lead. Kamryn McLaurin sealed the quarter with consecutive layups, ending the quarter 52-46 in favor of the Huskies.
Tulsa secured a commanding fourth-quarter performance to come back and defeat HCU. Toman and Riddick were instrumental for the Golden Hurricane, with Toman scoring multiple key layups, including one assisted by Riddick at 8:11, narrowing the gap early in the quarter. Cartwright added a crucial 3-pointer at 7:17, assisted by Peavy, to give Tulsa a slight edge. The team's defense forced 10 turnovers in the quarter, capitalizing on fast breaks to extend their lead. Despite the Huskies' efforts, including a 3-pointer by Madison Hurta at 6:50, Tulsa maintained control, finishing the quarter with a 29-15 advantage to secure the 75-67 victory.
