11/9/2025 10:01:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (2-0) defeated Prairie View A&M (0-2) 79-59 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, with a 40-22 advantage in paint points.
"Really proud of our team today," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "We worked really hard. I felt like we had great toughness on the floor, that we battled through some things in the first half. And there in the second half, it was really our pride plays and our rebounding that allowed us to make some of those runs that we had offensively. Both Abby Jegede and Dora Toman had great games. Were really key players for us. Abby, and the way that she scored and the way that she defended, she's a dynamic scorer that can score at all three levels. She was able to get to the rim, get to the free throw line, knock down some threes. And then Dori did a great job for us defensively, having 14 boards. Then the way that she has great court vision and was able to get a lot of assists, and put the ball in the right place, really helped us offensively overall. I felt like our team grew a lot today in the way that we were connected, in the way that we had to battle through some of those tougher things that that we were we got ourselves into a little bit in the first half and really proud of their effort down the stretch."
Jegede produced a career-high 29 points off 9/16 field goal shooting, including 2/3 from deep, and 9/10 from the free throw line.
"I think during the last game, I kind of had some first-game jitters, but today I got a lot of confidence from my teammates and my coaches, and our game plan," said Jegede. "We were able to execute it, and the ball was able to find me today."
Meanwhile, Toman led the Golden Hurricane in the rest of the statistical categories, finishing with 14 boards, five assists, three steals, and two blocks.
"I just tried to fit in our team's scheme in anyway I can," said Toman. "In our defense, I was asked to go get the rebounds and hustle, and then go to with the flow and go to transition, pass the ball up and help them out. I try to focus on them my teammates, and I felt like this is the part where I could help with the most in this game."
The game began with the Toman scoring a fastbreak layup, thanks to an assist from Jegede at 9:01, putting Tulsa on the scoreboard. The Panthers responded with a jumper by CJ Wilson at 8:38 to tie the game 2-2. Tulsa then went on a scoring run, with Mady Cartwright's layup at 7:19 following an assist from Laura Di Stefano, extending their lead to 8-2. Crystal Schultz kept Prairie View close, hitting a three-pointer at 6:42 and adding a layup at 5:52. However, Tulsa maintained their edge, closing the quarter with two free throws by Jegede at 0:54. Alana Shields hit a crucial three-pointer with 22 seconds left, but Tulsa held a narrow 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Tulsa edged ahead in the second quarter with a strong performance, outscoring the Panthers 19-15. Brynn Eshoo played a pivotal role, hitting a three-pointer at 8:19 and adding a fast-break layup at 6:29. Jegede also contributed significantly, closing the period with a layup that extended the home team's lead to 37-31. Wilson managed to keep the visitors close with key layups, but it wasn't enough to overcome Tulsa's balanced attack.
Tulsa expanded their lead in the third quarter, fueled by strong defensive play and efficient scoring. Jegede contributed significantly with a pair of free throws and a fast-break layup, helping Tulsa maintain momentum. Haven Fisher added a layup at the 22-second mark and capped the quarter with a sliding jumper at the buzzer, extending Tulsa's advantage. Shields was active on offense, but it wasn't enough to close the gap, as Tulsa ended the period leading 56-42.
Tulsa maintained control throughout the fourth quarter, securing a 79-59 victory over Prairie View. Jegede opened the quarter with a three-pointer, assisted by Cartwright, and finished the quarter with a total of nine points, including two successful free throws with 48 seconds remaining. Schultz managed to hit a pair of three-pointers, her last with just 4 seconds left in the game, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. The Golden Hurricane's defense forced five turnovers in the quarter, helping them extend their lead by outscoring the Panthers 23-17 in the final quarter.
