Tulsa Defeats UAPB 67-43 on Education Day

12/18/2025 2:44:00 PM | Women's Basketball

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (7-4) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-7) 67-43 Thursday morning in front of 4,165 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Golden Hurricane's annual Education Day game. It was the third-highest attended Tulsa women's basketball game in school history as junior forward Rylee Grays scored the team's 67th point at the buzzer to the delight of the young audience in the stands.

TU took down the Golden Lions with a 44-29 rebounding advantage and 36 points in the paint. Tulsa's defense forced 18 turnovers, contributing to their decisive victory under the home lights.

Junior guard Jade Clack had her best game in a Golden Hurricane uniform, scoring a career-high 16 points off 7-of-8 made field goals in just her second start for TU. Junior guard Mady Cartwright also finished in double-digits with 14 points and led Tulsa with three assists and three steals, while freshman guard Dora Toman led the floor with nine rebounds.

"Super proud of our team," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "I'm super proud of the way that we responded from our last game. I thought that we had a great start in the first and the second quarter especially. I felt like we felt like we had good transition and teamwork. I think one of the biggest differences in the game was rebounding, and I thought that our team did an exceptional job of rebounding and holding them on the glass. Our entire roster crashed the boards really hard, which allowed us to get going in some transition offense. One player I felt like was greatly impactful for the game was Jade Clack, because she really speeds up the game and has great pace. Overall, I love how our team is growing. You look at our non-conference schedule, we have one more game left. As we head on the road later this week, I'm really looking forward to seeing us step on the floor and compete but really pleased with our growth in the non-conference season."

The game commenced with UAPB's Jailah Pelly making an early impact, blocking a layup attempt by Hannah Riddick. Abby Jegede put the Golden Hurricane on the board with two successful free throws at 9:08, giving them an early lead. Tulsa's defensive play was highlighted by a steal from Mady Cartwright, though scoring was sparse on both sides. Laura Di Stefano extended the lead with two consecutive 3-pointers, each assisted by Alisha Peavy, at 1:59 and 1:27, respectively. Briontanay Marshall of the Golden Lions narrowed the gap with a layup, but the Hurricane maintained a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Tulsa maintained control throughout the second quarter, outscoring the Lions 24-9. Jade Clack contributed significantly, recording a layup at 8:54 and a fastbreak layup at 5:25, helping to extend the Hurricane's lead. Cartwright added to the momentum with a three-pointer at 2:36, and Rylee Grays capitalized on free throws to further increase the advantage. Dora Toman sealed the quarter with a layup at 29 seconds, ending the period with Tulsa ahead 34-16.

In the third quarter, Tulsa maintained control with a notable scoring advantage, securing a 54-30 lead over the Golden Lions. Clack was instrumental, contributing multiple baskets, including a layup at 6:43 and a jumper at 1:45. The defensive efforts were highlighted by Peavy's steal at 8:28 and Riddick's block at 8:35, keeping the visitors at bay. Indiya Bowen provided some resistance for Ark.-Pine Bluff with a three-pointer at 5:35, but the consistent scoring and defensive stops widened their lead by the end of the period.

Tulsa maintained their lead against the Golden Lions, with Cartwright contributing significantly early in the fourth quarter. Cartwright drained a three-pointer at 8:30, assisted by Toman, and soon after, Shamaryah Duncan knocked down another three-pointer following a fast break at 6:34, extending the advantage to 63-30. The Lions attempted a comeback with Khaniah Gardner scoring multiple layups, bringing them up to 43 points. Peavy then sealed the game for Tulsa with a layup at 1:08, and Grays added the final basket with less than one second remaining, concluding the game at 67-43.
