Tulsa Drops 4-2 Decision at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. — Although the Tulsa women's team grabbed the initial advantage, the Golden Hurricane couldn't escape a 2-2 deadlock in singles play, falling in a hard-fought match against a solid Purdue Boilermakers team (6-1). The 4-2 loss dropped TU to 8-3 on the year.

Tulsa earned the doubles point with two quick wins in the second and third positions, both in 6-1 results. After senior pair Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez took the second court, freshman Isabella Basson and sophomore Tayla Wilmot clinched the opening score for TU in the third position, leaving the No. 1 pairs knotted up at 4-4 atop the lineup.

To start singles action, Purdue took a 2-1 lead after claiming the fifth and sixth spots in straight sets. Senior Lily Hutchings answered with a two-set victory of her own, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Fatima Gutierrez.

Positions one, three and five were the only matches standing between Tulsa and victory. Seniors Maria Berlanga Bandera and Marina Manyoma Velasquez each forced a third set after a second-set win, but the momentum couldn't carry over as Purdue closed out at No. 1 and No. 4 to clinch and end the match at 4-2.

The Tulsa women will be back in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to host American Athletic Conference foe Rice (5-3) on Friday, Feb. 21. The dual match will stream on ESPN+.
