Tulsa Women’s Tennis Hosts Rice on Friday, Arkansas on Monday

TULSA, Okla. — The 8-3 Tulsa women's tennis team is prepared to take on a pair of ranked squads at home in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, starting with Rice on Friday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. and concluding the weekend against Arkansas on Monday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. Both matches will stream on ESPN+ and will be produced by the Cracked Racquets broadcast team.

Facing the Owls
  • This will be the 22nd meeting between TU and Rice
  • Tulsa leads the all-time series 13-8 and seeks its first win over the Owls since March 2, 2014.
  • Rice has won the last five matchups, including last year's in a 6-1 decision.
  • The Owls are 5-3 to start the season. They last their last two matches against SMU and No. 16 Pepperdine and have key wins over Houston and Arizona.
  • Friday will be Rice's second road match after hosting seven straight in Houston.
  • Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez headline the doubles lineup with a No. 33 ranking in the latest ITA Doubles Poll. They are 14-5 together and 6-2 in dual matches.
 
Scouting the Razorbacks
  • Monday will be just the 26th meeting between the Golden Hurricane and the Razorbacks.
  • Arkansas leads the series 17-8. The Hogs won last year's match 4-1 in Fayetteville, and Tulsa won the matchup before that in 2019 in a 4-1 winner.
  • The Razorbacks are 3-3 on the season with wins over SMU and Drake. Their last two matches ended in 4-3 heartbreakers to Wisconsin and Kansas.
  • Anet Koskel and Grace O'Donnell are ranked No. 78 in doubles action with an 8-5 overall record together and 3-1 mark in dual matches.
  • Carolina Gomez Alonso headlines the singles lineup with a No. 93 ITA singles ranking. She is 4-2 atop the lineup with a key win over No. 48 Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State.
 
Tulsa in the ITA Rankings
  • Central region-winning duo Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings stand as the 46th-ranked Division I duo according to the latest ITA Doubles Rankings.
  • The seniors are 13-3 overall together this year and 7-2 in dual matches. They were previously ranked as high as No. 18 in the Feb. 5 ITA rankings.
  • Berlanga broke the top 100 for the first time in her singles career, standing at No. 99 in the latest release. She's held down the No. 1 position with an 8-2 record, adding to her 15-4 overall mark this school year.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 25 will be the next team rankings release by the ITA. March 4, a Tuesday, will be the next singles and doubles rankings polls.
 
Seniors on All-Time TU Career Win Lists
  • Maria Berlanga Bandera has 71 career doubles wins entering the weekend's action, ranking No. 12 in program history. She needs six more to pass Jennifer DeSpain's (1997-01) 76 doubles victories for 11th.
  • Berlanga also has 73 singles wins. She needs five more to pass Ksenia Laskutova's (2014-18) 77 victories for 11th.
  • Lily Hutchings maintains 70 doubles triumphs and 61 wins in singles play, ranking 13th in TU doubles history and needing 17 more singles successes to pass Laskutova in the TU record books.
  • Ana Naranjo Martinez ties her teammate Berlanga in the doubles chart with 71 wins for 12th. She also has 46 singles victories under her belt.
 
Last Time Out
  • Tulsa went 1-2 on the road with losses to strong Oklahoma and Purdue squads while earning a 4-0 triumph over DePaul last week.
