TU Women Cruise to 4-0 Rout of Kansas City

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's tennis team enjoyed a decisive 4-0 shutout Sunday over the Kansas City Roos (0-3) in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, improving to 7-1 on the season.

It took two matches for Tulsa to claim its eighth consecutive doubles point as No. 26 senior pair Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings took the top spot 6-1 and sophomore Tayla Wilmot and freshman Isabella Basson won the third position 6-2 to clinch the opening score. Seniors Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez left their match unfinished up 5-2 in the No. 2 slot.

Berlanga continues to be a reliable force for the Hurricane in singles play. She blazed past Joana Miralles 6-0, 6-2 atop the lineup. Berlanga's sophomore teammate Saniya Singh also had a perfect opening set, finishing 6-0, 6-1 against Amal Gati for Tulsa's third team point.

Clinching and ending the day's action was Manyoma-Velasquez in the 3-spot. She came away with consecutive 6-3 sets to secure Tulsa's 4-0 victory and seventh team win of the season. Hutchings, sophomore Erin McKenzie and freshman Eda Numanoglu each had a one-set lead when they abandoned their matches.

The Tulsa women will head to Norman to take on No. 12 Oklahoma (4-0) on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. Then, TU will head to West Lafayette, Ind., to face DePaul (3-2) and Purdue (3-1) Feb. 15-16.
