Tulsa Women Fall 6-1 to No. 12 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. — The Tulsa women's tennis team faced the 12^th-ranked squad in the nation in the Oklahoma Sooners, falling 6-1 Tuesday in Norman. The Golden Hurricane stand at 7-2 overall following the loss.

The Hurricane lost its first doubles point of the season after winning it over eight consecutive opponents entering Tuesday's competition. Doubles play was concluded in two matches with the Sooners, who featured two ranked duos in their lineup, taking the first and third positions in 6-3 decisions. No. 28 Cara Mester and Alina Shcherbinina of OU, who Tulsa's Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings defeated in the ITA Central Regional Championships last fall, got their revenge against TU's star duo atop the lineup.

Oklahoma's singles lineup was too much to handle as the Sooners featured five nationally ranked players. After both teams elected to play out all matches, Oklahoma took position Nos. 2-6.

Scoring Tulsa's lone point of the day was Berlanga, whose conditioning and stamina outlasted her opponent, Shcherbinina, at the No. 1 spot. After Shcherbinina won the first set 6-2, Berlanga prevailed in a 7-6 nailbiter of a second set, which ended in a 14-12 result in favor of the four-year letterwinner for TU.

In the 10-point tiebreaker, Berlanga continued to make clutch swings when it counted, closing out 10-7 to secure a team point for Tulsa.

The Tulsa women will be back in action in 11 days with a dual match against DePaul (3-2) on Saturday, Feb. 15, on Purdue's home courts. Then, TU will face the hosting Boilermakers (4-1) the following day.
