TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa men's basketball team could not find any rhythm on offense and struggled to stop Florida Atlantic in a 79-55 loss on Legends Day in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday.
Tulsa (9-15, 3-8 The American) trailed the Owls (13-10, 6-4 The American) for more than 35 minutes in the contest as the Hurricane fell for the fourth straight contest. Florida Atlantic took the lead for the first time with 15:50 to play and never looked back, extending the advantage to double digits with 10 to play in the half and holding a halftime lead of 18. The Owls pushed the lead over 20 for good with 15 minutes to play.
The Hurricane struggled from the floor, shooting just 31.7 percent, the second lowest of the season and worst in the Reynolds Center this year. Tulsa also was an abysmal 3-of-21 (14.3 percent) on 3-pointers, which is second only to the Loyola Chicago game in terms of worst percentage and fewest makes.
On the other end, Florida Atlantic shot 50 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) on 3-pointers. The Owls shot the trey particularly well in the opening half, knocking down 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) of their attempts. FAU moved the ball well, assisting on 21 of the team's 30 made baskets.
TU only turned it over three more times than FAU, 10-7, but the Owls amassed an 18-9 advantage in points of those turnovers.
Tyshawn Archie led TU in scoring for the second straight game with 11 points. Dwon Odom and Braeden Carrington each scored 10. Odom's three assists was a team-high on Saturday. Freshman Ian Smikle was again Tulsa's top rebounder, pulling down seven boards.
Baba Miller's 17-point, 10-rebound double-double paced the Owls on Saturday. He also dished out five assists, joining Niccolo Moretti for the team lead in the contest. Kaleb Green and Matas Vokietaitis each scored 11, and Ken Evans Jr. added 10 to round out the double figure scorers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF…
The Hurricane came out with a lot of energy, scoring the first six points of the game. Barnes connected on a second chance jumper, followed by an Odom driving layup and a Smikle layup.
However, the Owls quickly responded with a 13-0 run to take a lead they'd never relinquish. Florida Atlantic went on to have runs of 7-0 to push the lead to 23-12 at the 9:59 mark, and later an 8-0 run to go ahead 35-17 with 4:15 on the first half clock. The lead grew as large as 19 as Tulsa failed to keep up with the eight first half 3-pointers from the Owls.
Tulsa's last points of the half came on three free throws from Carrington, who was fouled on an effort from long range. He made all three to cut the deficit to 16 with 2:30 on the clock. Florida Atlantic made a driving layup with 32 seconds remaining to go back ahead 40-22, which would serve as the score at the half.
The Hurricane shot just 25.8 percent in the opening half and made 2-of-11 (18.2) of its 3-point attempts. Archie and Odom each scored five to pace TU.
IN THE SECOND HALF …
Florida Atlantic scored on its first possession to push the lead to 20 at the open of the second half. Tulsa would never get the lead under 15 the remainder of the contest.
The Owls did not have any major runs in the second half, having just two 6-0 mini runs early in the half, but were never threatened as Florida Atlantic slowly built its lead. The advantage eventually breached 30 for the first time, 75-45 with 3:36 to play and reached a game-high 31, 79-50, with just over two minutes left.
From there, Tulsa closed on a 7-0 run, it's longest of the game, to get the final score of 79-55.
