TULSA, Okla. –– The Golden Hurricane makes its way east for a Wednesday night American Athletic Conference meeting with the Temple Owls in the Liacouras Center.
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) and will air on ESPN+ with Ray Dunne and Jason Ivey on the call. Fans can also catch the contest on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard will bring fans the action.
Tulsa (9-15, 3-8 The American) and Temple (14-10, 6-5 The American) meet for the 21st time when the teams take to the court tomorrow night. The Hurricane leads the series 12-8. The series started with a pair of games in 1995 and 1996, but the 18 other games have all been played as members of The American, with Tulsa leading those games 10-8.
The Hurricane is 5-6 in Philadelphia against the Owls and 4-6 in the Liacouras Center. This includes last season's meeting, a 72-67 TU win near the end of the regular season. Jared Garcia scored 14 and had eight rebounds as Tulsa picked up its second road conference win of the campaign.
Both Temple and Tulsa ride losing streaks of varying lengths heading into the Wednesday night game. The Owls have a pair of two-game losing streaks sandwiched around a pair of overtime wins. Temple scored 91 points at South Florida but gave up 100 in the nine-point loss. Then, the Owls lost 90-82 at Memphis, revenge for Memphis' lone league loss thus far.
On the other end, the Hurricane is coming off a disappointing 79-55 home loss to Florida Atlantic. Tulsa had its second worst shooting night of the season, and worst in the Donald W. Reynolds Center. It was the fourth straight defeat for TU, which ties the season high.
A bright spot over the past two games is the play of sophomore guard Tyshawn Archie, who is attempting to bounce back from a rough stretch of games of his own. He led TU in scoring in the games at Memphis and against Florida Atlantic with 17 and 11. He added four rebounds in each game and recorded four steals against the Tigers. He connected on 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) of his field goals and 3-of-5 (60 percent) 3-pointers in the two games. This comes after a stretch of five games where Archie knocked down just 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) of his shots and made one 3-pointer in 13 attempts (7.6 percent). It was a rare cold stretch for the energetic guard who averages 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting nearly 40 percent this season.
Archie is one of four TU players to average double figures in scoring this season. Dwon Odom (13.5) leads the way. The graduate guard averages 5.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists, doing it all for Tulsa. Odom's 122 assists and assists per game leads the conference and ranks 44th and 52nd nationally, respectively.
In his second season at Temple, head coach Adam Fisher has the program headed in the right direction after finishing 16-20 and 5-13 in league play in his debut campaign. Jamal Mashburn Jr. leads the Owls and the conference in scoring, averaging 22.1 points per game. However, the nation's second leading scorer has missed the last two games with injury. The son of former NBA star Jamal Mashburn, the graduate guard has shooting clips of 43.6 percent from the floor, 44.2 percent on 3-pointers and 78.7 percent at the charity stripe, where he is second in the conference for makes behind Memphis' PJ Haggerty (147).
It's not just Mashburn Jr. who goes to the foul line a lot, the Owls do better than any other team in The American and rank seventh nationally for free throw attempts (26.5) … Temple's 19.5 makes per game also leads the league and is fourth in the NCAA.
Zion Stanford has only made seven starts, but is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per contest. Steve Settle (11.9) and Quante Berry (10.7) round out the players who average double figures in scoring. Settle leads the Owls on the glass, pulling down 6.3 rebounds per contest, while Berry's 52 assists leads the program.
.
After tomorrow contest, the Golden Hurricane returns to the Reynolds Center on Saturday. The University of Tulsa hosts a men's and women's basketball doubleheader as the women take on North Texas in the early game. The men hosts UTSA in a nationally televised game on ESPNU. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
