Last Second Shot Downs Tulsa

Keaston Willis reaches 2,000 career points

TULSA, Okla. – Isaiah Barnes knocked down a 3-pointer off a Braeden Carrington pass to tie the game with 12 seconds remaining, but Tulane got its last second shot to fall to beat the Golden Hurricane 79-77 in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday afternoon.

Tulsa (11-18, 5-11 The American) finished 4-of-4 from the field in the final 3:30 of game time to battle back and tie Tulane (17-12, 11-5 The American). The stretch included a 3-pointer from graduate guard Keaston Willis with 2:16 to play, pushing him past 2,000 career points and halving the Tulane lead. The Hurricane had opportunities, but a turnover and missed front end of a one-and-one hurt TU.

The Green Wave had a chance to ice the game with 23 seconds to play but also missed its one-and-one. Barnes pulled down the rebound and pushed the ball ahead. Carrington drove the baseline, but instead of taking a contest layup, he kicked it out to the top of the key for Barnes, who buried the 3-pointer.

On the final possession, Rowan Brumbaugh found Gregg Glenn III on a pick-and-roll near the basket. Glenn laid it in with a second remaining to push the Green Wave ahead for good, 79-77. A Tulsa full court shot attempt was off the mark and Tulane held on for the win.

Barnes finished with 20 points to pace the Hurricane in scoring, shooting 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the field. Willis finished with 13 on the evening, recording four 3-pointers. Dwon Odom added 12 points and eight assists, while Carrington rounded out the double figure scorers with 11. Freshman Ian Smikle pulled down seven rebounds.

Glenn III was the hero for the Green Wave, and his final bucket made him the game's highest scorer with 22 points, despite foul trouble limiting him to 21 minutes. He finished 8-of-10 at the free throw line. Brumbaugh added 11 to go with seven assists.

Both teams made 29 field goals, with Tulsa shooting a slightly better 50 percent compared to Tulane's 48.3 percent. The Hurricane knocked down 11 3-pointers at a 44 percent rate, while Tulane connected on 5-of-16 (31.3 percent).

The Hurricane shot 53.1 percent in the first half and made 7-of-14 3-pointers while jumping out to a 43-36 halftime lead. Barnes played a major role in helping lead by as many as 12 in the opening stanza with 13 first half points. Willis, Smikle and Jesaiah McWright six points. TU led 43-31 with a little more than three minutes remaining in the half but did not score again.

A 19-5 Tulane run from 18:20 to 12:28 helped the Green Wave turn a 48-40 deficit into a 59-53 lead. That was the turning point in the contest as TU would never regain the advantage. Tulsa's two field goals in that stretch came on a Barnes alley-oop and a Willis 3-pointer.

Tulsa continued to fight, never falling behind by more than seven points the rest of the way. But the Hurricane could not find a way to get over the hump as until the Barnes 3-pointer to tie the contest.
