Naranjo Clinches Tulsa’s 4-3 Winner at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Tulsa women's tennis team earned its second consecutive 4-3 win Tuesday after escaping the TCU Horned Frogs (10-5) in Fort Worth. Senior Ana Naranjo Martinez was the clinching point at Singles No. 5 for the Golden Hurricane, who improve to 13-4 on the season.

The crucial doubles point decisively went to Tulsa after the Hurricane claimed the top two positions in 6-3 and 6-1 decisions. Senior duo Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings clinched the opening score for Tulsa atop the lineup, leaving sophomore Tayla Wilmot and Isabella Basson unfinished at 4-4 at No. 3.

Tulsa and TCU traded points throughout singles play, with Berlanga striking first in the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set win, moving her to 20-5 overall and 12-3 in dual matches.

The Frogs responded with a two-setter in the four-spot before tying the match up at 2-2 with a three-set battle in the No. 2 court. Senior Mariana Manyoma Velasquez gave Tulsa the 3-2 edge when she earned a two-set victory that included a 7-6 tiebreak win in the first set (7-6 (7-3), 6-2).

TCU made it a 3-3 match after sweeping the No. 6 position, putting all the pressure on Naranjo against TCU's Tomi Main in the No. 5 position. The two players were late in the third set when all eyes shifted to them. Main forced the third stanza with a 6-3 second-set win, but Naranjo would ultimately outlast Main's momentum, prevailing in a gritty 7-6 third set with a 7-4 tiebreak win to seal the Hurricane's 4-3 road win.

The Tulsa women will conclude their road trip with an American Athletic Conference showdown against North Texas (6-8) on Wednesday, March 19, at 4 p.m. and a neutral contest against Arizona (14-5) on Sunday, March 23, on Oklahoma State's campus in Stillwater with first serves at 10 a.m.
