TAMPA, Fla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team cruised to the doubles point and saw four players fight for three sets against the American Athletic Conference's top singles core but would ultimately fall 5-2 to the No. 25 South Florida Bulls Wednesday in Tampa. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 9-12 with just three dual matches left in the regular season.
TU was on autopilot during doubles play, running away with its fifth consecutive doubles point with 6-2 since in the second and third positions. The opening score was clinched in the two-spot by junior Luis Felipe Miguel fresh off his AAC Player of the Week award and redshirt sophomore Gus Tettamble.
South Florida jumped ahead in singles play 2-1 with a pair of straight-set decisions in the second and sixth courts. Shortly after, all four remaining matches went to a third set. South Florida forced three of them to enter a third set with second-set victories. The Bulls rode that momentum to wins in the first, third and fourth positions with the clinch coming from Gughi Verdese in the No. 4 position.
Junior Reiya Komagata survived a back-and-forth battle in the No. 5 court and would eventually prevail for Tulsa's only singles point in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win.
The Tulsa men will take an 11-day break before resuming action with their final home matches of the season, starting with Tulane (5-9) on Sunday, March 30, at 12:00 p.m. and wrapping up the home slate against Wichita State (7-8) on Sunday, April 6, at 12:00 p.m.
