TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's tennis team took a tough loss Tuesday to No. 67 Wichita State, falling 4-1 on the outdoor courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The 53rd-ranked Golden Hurricane dropped to 10-4 on the year while the Shockers moved to 6-5 with their first ranked win of the season.
Tulsa sported two ranked doubles pairs for the first time this season after the ITA moved seniors Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings up to No. 28 and put senior pair Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez at No. 58, their first career doubles ranking.
Unfortunately, the new ranks put a target on their backs as both duos fell in doubles play to unranked pairings in 6-3 results, giving the doubles point to Wichita State. Sophomore Tayla Wilmot and freshman Isabella Basson left their match unfinished up 5-3 in the third position.
Wichita State carried their momentum into singles play, benefitting from three straight-set wins in the first, fourth and sixth courts. Hutchings was able to knock out Kristina Kudryavtseva in the No. 3 spot in a 6-3, 6-4 decision, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback as the Shockers clinched and ended the action at 4-1 with a two-set win at the bottom of the lineup.
Velasquez left her match unfinished up one set in the two-slot, and Naranjo was down a set in the fifth position when the match ended.
The Tulsa women will be on the road for their next five matches, starting with Abilene Christian on Friday, March 7. TU's next home match will be their last of the season as they'll take on UTSA on Saturday, March 29, for Senior Day.
