Tulsa Tennis Teams Split Simultaneous Matches Against Memphis

4/13/2025 7:05:00 PM | Women's Tennis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tulsa men's and women's tennis teams took on the Memphis men's and women's programs in concurrent matches Sunday at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis. The Golden Hurricane women (16-7) earned a 4-2 victory, while the TU men (14-13) dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker.

The Tulsa men completed doubles play first, fighting their way to 6-4 and 6-3 wins in the first and second positions, respectively, to earn the coveted doubles point. It was junior Luis Felipe Miguel and redshirt sophomore Gus Tettamble who clinched the opening score for TU.

On the women's side, senior pair Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings closed out a 6-4 win atop the lineup and saw the remaining Tulsa duos reach 5-5 scores. Prevailing in the No. 2 position for the 7-5 win and the doubles clinch was senior duo Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez, leaving sophomore Tayla Wilmot and freshman Isabella Basson unfinished at 6-5, just a game away from clinching the doubles point themselves.

The women's team would go on to finish singles play first. The Tigers jumped out to a 2-1 lead after claiming the second and fourth courts out of the gate. Then, the Hurricane struck back with straight-set victories by sophomore Erin McKenzie in the six-spot and Berlanga atop the lineup before Hutchings came back and won in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-0) at the No. 3 court, to seal and end the dual match at 4-2 for the Hurricane.

Naranjo left her match unfinished down 0-1 in the third set.

Back on the men's side, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 match lead with consecutive victories in the second, fourth and sixth positions, forcing the Hurricane to close out the remaining singles matches.

All remainders reached a third set. Junior Reiya Komagata was the first to finish in that group, coming through with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback victory at Singles No. 5. Then, Okonkwo, ranked No. 107 in the land, took down No. 124 Connor Gannon 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) in a back-and-forth tilt at No. 1.

The dual match came down to Seger and Harry Rock at Singles No. 3, where Rock would escape from Seger's grasp in a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 result for the 4-3 win, shutting down Tulsa's hopes of sweeping the dual matches in Memphis Sunday.

The Tulsa tennis teams look ahead to the American Athletic Conference Championships, set for April 17-20 at Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis. Seedings will be determined by ITA Team Rankings, followed by overall records.
