Hurricane Drops 4-2 Decision to Tulane

4/6/2025 6:09:00 PM | Women's Tennis

NEW ORLEANS, La. — After poor weather in New Orleans forced a venue change that resulted in 5+ hour-long singles play that spanned three playable courts at Hilton Riverside, the Tulsa women's tennis team couldn't escape the Tulane Green Wave, falling in a hard-fought 4-2 decision Sunday. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 15-7 on the year.

The teams elected to engage in singles play first, with the top three singles matches going first. All three starting TU players dropped their first set but forced a third stanza with second-set victories. The only one to close out a win in that group was senior Mariana Manyoma Velasquez, who punched in a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 position. It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Pereira, Colombia native, who hasn't lost a singles match since Feb. 4.

Tying up the dual match at 2-2 was senior Ana Naranjo Martinez in the fifth position. She prevailed in a gritty 7-5, 7-5 two-set win to earn her sixth straight singles win, improving to 13-4 overall.

From there, Tulane closed out a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 tiebreak win in the No. 6 spot and a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 result in the 4-slot, where the match was clinched for the Green Wave at 4-2.

The Tulsa women will take on Memphis (6-12) on Sunday, April 13, at 3 p.m. alongside the Tulsa men's tennis team at Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis for the regular season finale.
