Golden Hurricane Set for Big 12 Rowing Championship on Sunday

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa rowers are set to make their Big 12 Championship debut this Sunday, May 18, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. The event will air live on ESPN+ from 8-10 a.m. Central.

The Golden Hurricane joins No. 15 UCF, Kansas, Kansas State, Old Dominion and West Virginia for the 16th edition of the Big 12 Rowing Championship. The overall team winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship held in West Windsor, N.J. (May 30-June 1).

There will be a first-time Big 12 champion on Sunday as Texas (13) and Oklahoma (2) had won every title since the inception of the event in 2009 before departing for the SEC ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Tulsa seeks to win its first team conference title in program history. The Golden Hurricane finished as the team runner-up in the final American Athletic Conference Championship a year ago, with a huge win from its 1V8 crew, who went on to earn AAC Boat of the Year honors. Current third-year Head Coach Brandon Campbell and his coaching staff were also named The American's Coaching Staff of the Year.

The returning TU rowers from last year's Boat of the Year include junior Emily Bell, senior Anna Shaw, a second-team all-conference rower, and first team all-conference seniors Darya Vyrupayeva and Kristina Harris. All four are set to be coxed by junior Bri Gfroerer Sunday morning.

The Big 12 Championship includes six races with a 3v4 exhibition between UCF and Old Dominion starting the day off at 8 a.m. Central. Scoring races will begin at 8:15 a.m. with the 3v8, followed in 15-minute increments by the 2v4, 1v4, 2v8 and 1v8. The awards ceremony will conclude the day at 10 a.m.
