Lutkenhaus and McEvoy Find the Podium in AAC Outdoor Championship Finale
5/17/2025 8:04:00 PM | Track and Field
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sophomore Andrew Lutkenhaus and redshirt senior Shay McEvoy added two podium finishes for All-Conference honors Saturday during the final day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Charlotte, N.C. The Golden Hurricane men finished the meet eighth with 50 points, while the women placed 11th with 18 points.
The Charlotte women in their home facility and the South Florida men repeated as outdoor conference champions.
Women
Freshman Matilda Laidlaw (4:32.23) earned a top-five finish in the 1,500m final, while junior Billie Rouse took sixth in the 800m and Friday's steeplechase champion Sara Morefield placed eighth in the 5,000m to round out top-10 placers for the women's team.
On the field, freshman Emma Agost Queral gained valuable experience in a championship setting, launching herself 1.55m (4'11") for a new personal best in the high jump.
"I think we got the points we thought we would get," said Women's Head Coach and Director of Track Steve Gulley said. "We just had so many injuries this season and most of our point scorers were freshmen and sophomores, and that's just not going to cut it in this meet. We're just going to have to come back next year and bring back more depth to this meet if we're going to be able to be competitive."
Men
Lutkenhaus led a group of three Golden Hurricane finalists in the 800m for a third-place finish Saturday in 1:50.53, earning all-conference status for a second time this year after taking third in the indoor 800m in February.
McEvoy became a two-time all-conference runner this weekend after finishing second in the men's 5,000m, crossing the line at 14:13.05. Three of his teammates, including freshman Levi Rowan (6th), redshirt freshman Luke Birdseye (7th) and redshirt freshman Ben Brown (8th) also put points on the board for TU in the event.
"We once again brought a pretty young group out to Charlotte and that inexperience showed up," said Men's Head Coach Taylor Gulley. "I think the guys will grow massively after this weekend, and we have some incredible young pieces to build around the next few years. Shay [McEvoy] getting second in the 5K was a highlight, bouncing back after his 10K. Luke [Birdseye] had a really good 3K steeple as well. Definitely need to take a big step forward, but we believe we're genuinely on track to do so!"
