Tulsa Volleyball Sweeps Cleveland State in Rumble in the Rockies Finale

8/31/2025 3:41:00 PM | Volleyball

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Tulsa (1-2) got its first win of the 2025 season on Sunday, sweeping Cleveland State (0-3) in straight sets, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14, to conclude Wyoming's Rumble in the Rockies tournament.

"I'm incredibly proud of the way our team came together today," Head Coach Lauren Ramatowski said. "It was a true team effort—every player contributed and played a role in this win. Brayden did a phenomenal job setting the tempo and distributing the ball, leading our offense to an impressive .405 hitting percentage. Jill was nearly unstoppable, hitting .889 and Kat was right behind her at .779 and a high for Olivia Vance at .538 and Beth Bayless at .412. Those numbers don't happen without great passing from Lauren Eitler, Lauren Patterson and Quinn Swofford. Everyone, including players from the bench, contributed to this win with constant communication and celebration."

The Golden Hurricane began the first set by capitalizing on two consecutive attack errors by Cleveland State's Bryn VanVleet, taking an early 2-0 lead. Despite some back-and-forth errors from both teams, the Golden Hurricane maintained control with consistent offensive contributions from Beth Bayless and Olivia Vance, who each recorded kills early on. A significant turning point occurred when Kat Cooper hammered two consecutive kills, helping Tulsa extend their lead to 15-7. Brayden Hipp facilitated the offense effectively, assisting on multiple kills, including a critical one by Jill Hanson to secure the set with a 25-14 victory for Tulsa.

In the second set, Tulsa built an early 5-1 lead with contributions from Vance and Bayless, who each recorded kills. Hipp provided key assists, aiding Bayless and Hanson in extending Tulsa's lead to 11-2. A service ace by Hipp pushed the score to 13-3, as Tulsa capitalized on the Vikings' errors. Despite a few service errors from Tulsa, they maintained momentum, with Lauren Eitler and Vance each delivering kills to secure the set at 25-12. Hipp's playmaking was crucial, tallying numerous assists throughout the set.

Tulsa started the third set with a strong 3-0 run, aided by a pair of kills from Bayless and Cooper, before a service error gave Cleveland St. their first point. The Hurricane maintained control with Cooper and Eitler each contributing multiple kills, leading the team to a 6-2 advantage. Cleveland St. struggled with attack errors, particularly from VanVleet, which allowed Tulsa to extend their lead to 19-10, highlighted by a service ace from Hipp at 18-10. Tulsa continued to capitalize on the Vikings' errors and maintained their lead, closing the set with a 25-14 victory after a final attack error by Matilda Dahlstrom.

The next challenge for Tulsa takes them on the road to Fayetteville, Ark., where they'll take on Cal Poly, Oklahoma and Arkansas at the Razorbacks' Wooo Pig Invitational.
