Golden Hurricane Men’s Soccer Kicks Off Season with Home Exhibition

8/5/2025 4:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. — The Golden Hurricane men's soccer program is set to begin the 2025 season on Wednesday with an exhibition against NAIA program Southwestern Christian University at home in the Hurricane Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., and admission is free for all fans.

Now in his 31st year leading the Tulsa men, Head Coach Tom McIntosh leads a squad that is hungry to bounce back from a down year last season. In the quest for his 13th overall conference title (four regular season titles and eight tournament titles), McIntosh added former Oral Roberts coach and highly touted recruiter Brian McCurdy as Associate Head Coach of the 2025 roster. McIntosh also brought back former TU and Central Arkansas assistant Chase Robertson to coach the goalkeepers, and Henry Sach returns for his second year as an assistant coach and third season overall on the Tulsa staff. Aside from Robertson, the central coaching core is composed entirely of Tulsa alumni.

Tulsa returns seven starters from the season finale last year, including defender Luke Adams, 2024 American First Team All-Conference defender Wes Bottenburg, 2024 All-Freshman defender Alex Cunningham, forward Gijs Hovius, midfielder Bowen McCloud and veteran defenders Nils Orywol and Kevin Thallinger.

Other returning letterwinners for the Golden Hurricane include midfielder Gyuwon Chong, Will Applegate, Aimar Membrila, Jared Aguilar and Ian McIntosh, forwards Chris Nezianya and Trajan Wormington and goalkeeper Carlito Saylon.

The Golden Hurricane welcomes five transfer players to the roster in 2025. The TU coaching staff utilized the transfer portal this offseason and signed Campbell goalkeeper Samy Slimi (Paris, France), Eastern Florida State midfielder Luc Achermann-Stanfield (London, England), Oklahoma Wesleyan forward Joao Neves (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Pittsburgh defender Dani Gamboa (Barcelona, Spain) and Virginia Tech defender Yonis Kireh (Marseille, France).

Achermann-Stanfield was a 2024 JUCO All-American scoring machine for Eastern Florida State, where he netted seven goals and set a program record 20 assists throughout last season, while Neves was a four-time all-conference standout between his stops at Pratt Community College in his first two collegiate campaigns and Oklahoma Wesleyan in the previous two seasons.

Eight true freshmen are looking forward to donning the Blue and Gold for the first time this year. They are forwards Ben Berzen (Dortmund, German), Joses Chukwu (Toronto, Ontario) and Arnau Pedrola Fortuny (Tarragona, Spain), defenders Nick Nkansa-Dwamena (London, England), Jake Reich (Cooper City, Fla.) and Danny Stevens (Munich, Germany), midfielder Jareth Mejia (Irving, Texas) and goalkeeper Sebastian Gorecki (Palatine, Ill.)

After TU kicks off its 19-match season on Wednesday, the Golden Hurricane will host SMU for another exhibition on Saturday, August 9, at 7 p.m. before taking part in one more exhibition at Wake Forest on August 15. The regular season officially begins for Tulsa on August 21 against CSUN, the first of three consecutive home contests at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium.
