TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa women's tennis (11-10) rallied from a dropped doubles point to defeat North Texas (13-6) 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
This marked just the second time this season the Golden Hurricane recovered after losing the doubles point.
North Texas struck first in doubles, as Marin Adati and Ujin Batsukh defeated Lilitha Ndungane and Carolina Alonso 6-1 to put the Mean Green in position to clinch. Tulsa answered at the No. 1 spot, where Maria Santos and Isabella Basson earned a 6-1 win to even things briefly. UNT regained control, however, with a 6-2 victory over Coral Valle and Erin McKenzie to secure the doubles point.
Tulsa responded emphatically in singles. Alice Baba got things started with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win on court four, and Valle followed with a 6-0, 6-2 result to give the Hurricane a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Hurricane and Mean Green battled for a bit more, with UNT's Carolina Laydner coming close to adding a point to UNT's total, leading 6-1, 5-3 over Basson (match was unfinished). Before Laydner could close, Santos and Alonso secured their courts in succession, 6-4, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively, to take the win for Tulsa.
The remaining courts stayed competitive, with UNT's Carolina Laydner nearing a point while leading 6-1, 5-3 over Basson before the match went unfinished. Tulsa closed the door elsewhere, as Santos and Alonso secured straight-set wins in quick succession, 6-4, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively, to clinch the team victory.
The win marked Alonso's team-leading 12th singles victory of the season and her third match clinch.
Tulsa returns to action Friday, April 3 at 1 p.m. against Denver as part of its final home weekend at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
