TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa women's tennis (8-9) pushed its winning streak to four matches, a season high, with a 4-2 victory over Tarleton State (8-5) on Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Tulsa secured its first win of the year without claiming the doubles point, with Tarleton State taking the doubles point by way of wins on courts one and two. The Texans defeated the Tulsa pairs of Maria Santos and Carolina Alonso (6-2) and Tayla Wilmot and Coral Valle (6-4). Erin McKenzie and Isabella Basson's match on court three was left unfinished at 5-4.
The Golden Hurricane responded strongly in singles, winning four of the five completed matches. McKenzie started the comeback with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Duru Kuscu on court six to level the match. Santos followed with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 win against Maria Castano at the top spot to give Tulsa its first lead of the day.
Tarleton State briefly evened the score when Aya Ishii defeated Basson 7-5, 6-4 on court two, but Tulsa regained control soon after. Alonso delivered a steady 6-4, 6-4 win over Emma Persson at No. 3 singles to put TU within one point of the match victory.
The clincher came on court four, where Alice Baba battled back after dropping the opening set. Baba recovered from a 1-6 first-set loss to take the second set 6-4 before closing out the match in a third-set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3). The comeback victory secured the dual match for Tulsa and marked the first clinching win of Baba's collegiate career.
Valle's match on court five was left unfinished with Tulsa already securing the team result.
The Golden Hurricane will take an extended break before returning to play on Mar. 20, when they travel to Houston to face Rice on their home courts at 11 a.m.
