Danny Henderson was named an assistant coach at The University of Tulsa to his staff on April 3, 2017.

A longtime Texas high school basketball coach, Henderson came to Tulsa from Oklahoma State, where he spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach following three years as an assistant coach at Boise State.

Last season, Henderson helped lead the Cowboys to a 20-13 record and an at-large berth in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. During his three-year tenure at Boise State (2013-16), he helped guide the Broncos to the 2014-15 Mountain West Conference title, while the squad posted at least 20 wins each season. Henderson was responsible for defensive game plans and worked individually with the Broncos post players, including James Webb III, who was the 2015 Mountain West Newcomer of the Year and then earned first-team all-conference, USBWA All-District VIII and NABC All-District 17 honors in 2015-16.

Under Henderson’s tutelage, the Broncos defense improved its standing in the conference each season, topping out as the Mountain West’s No. 2 scoring defense in his final season with the team.

Before making the move to the collegiate ranks in 2013, Henderson won over 700 games and four state titles as a high school coach in Texas. Two of his teams were named the MaxPreps High School National Champions.

Henderson posted an overall 708-172 (.805) record in 25 years as a prep head coach in Texas and was named the 2012 MaxPreps National Coach of the Year while at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. At Marcus, Henderson’s teams compiled a three-year record of 114-6 (.950) and won Class 5A state titles in 2011 and 2012 with 39-1 and 39-2 records, respectively. Those two teams, which were led by current Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart, were named the MaxPreps High School National Champions.

Henderson, who spent the 2012-13 season as the head coach at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas, combined to win four state championships and made seven semifinal appearances in the state tournament.

Throughout his career, Henderson garnered several coaching awards and was a finalist for the Naismith National High School Coach of the Year. He also was named TABC Texas Coach of the Year, Texas Sportswriters Coach of the Year and Southwest United States Coach of the Year.

He began his head coaching career at Liberty Hill High School near Austin, Texas, in 1988, and moved on to Peaster High School in 1993. Henderson led Peaster HS to state titles in 1999 and 2000. He became the head coach at Marcus HS in 2009, before accepting the head coaching position at Duncanville.

Henderson earned a bachelor's in history and physical education, and a master's in education, both from Austin College. He and his wife, Anna, have two children: Maddie and Sophie.
