Maiya Michel joined the Golden Hurricane women's basketball staff as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in April of 2025.
Michel brings an impressive resume to the program with previous experience at California Baptist, Idaho State, Arizona State, Vanguard, Mt. San Antonio College, University of La Verne, and a strong playing career at the University of Denver. During her college coaching career, she has developed student-athletes into 1000-point scorers, All-Conference, and All-State performers by utilizing her background in training, coaching, and supervision of physical and team performance.
Michel comes to Tulsa after one season at CBU, where she helped coach CeCe Legaspi to WAC Freshman of the Year honors and Khloe Lemon to second team all-conference status.
Before CBU, Michel served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Idaho State from 2022-24, where she signed the two-time Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year. While with the Bengals, she was listed in Silver Waves Media's 2024 list of the 50 Most Impactful Women's Assistants in women's college basketball.
Prior to her stint at Idaho State, Michel worked for Arizona State as the Assistant Director of Operations.
Michel spent two seasons at Vanguard University, an NAIA member school in Costa Mesa, California. During the 2019-20 season, Michel took over as interim head coach of the Lions, leading the team to a 23-6 record and picking up multiple wins against ranked opponents. Michel led the Lions to a No. 3 seed heading into the NAIA National Championship before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michel was an assistant coach for Mt. San Antonio College in 2017-18, focusing on the development of perimeter players, monitoring player efficiencies, managing substitution patterns and assisting with play calls. Before that, she spent three seasons (2014-17) at the University of La Verne for her first coaching job.
As Denver player, Michel was a three-year starting forward who was named 2011 Charge Master of the Year, 2012 Defensive Player of the Year, 2013 Western Athletic Conference All-Defensive Team, and 2014 "So You Want to Be a Coach" graduate.
A native of Fontana, Calif., Michel earned her bachelor’s degree in digital media studies from Denver in 2014. In 2016, she received her MBA in sports management from the University of Real Madrid.
