LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 35-ranked University of Tulsa men's tennis team knocked off its first ranked opponent of 2011 as the Golden Hurricane defeated No. 48 Columbia University 4-0 Sunday morning at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
TU started strong by securing the doubles point and finished with a bang by taking the first three singles matches to earn the four points necessary to win the match.
The other three singles matches were unfinished due to time constraints.
Sophomores Alastair Barnes and Grant Ive defeated Haig Schneiderman and Tizian Bucher 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and sophomore Marcelo Arevalo and freshman Japie De Klerk moved to 4-0 as a tandem as they defeated John Yetimoglu and Rajeev Deb-Sen 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
The No. 22-ranked duo of junior Ashley Watling and sophomore Clifford Marsland were unable to make it 3-for-3 in doubles play as they fell to Nathaniel Gery and Kevin Kung 8-4.
Sophomore Tristan Jackson put Tulsa ahead 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 romp of Sho Matsumoto at No. 6 singles. No. 44-ranked Arevalo gave the Golden Hurricane a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Schneiderman at No. 1 singles, and No. 89-ranked Watling shut the door on the Lions with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 triumph over Cyril Bucher at No. 2 singles.
Arevalo is now on a three-match win streak, and Jackson snapped a three-match losing skid.
Matches from Marsland, Barnes and De Klerk were all unfinished.
Tulsa will next play host to Conference USA foe UAB at 6 p.m. Jan. 4 inside Case Tennis Center.
