Golden Hurricane Suffocates Hornets With 5-2 Triumph

TULSA, Okla. - Junior Ashley Watling was 2-0 and freshman Japie De Klerk kept his undefeated streak alive as The University of Tulsa men's tennis team took care of Sacramento State 5-2 Saturday night inside Case Tennis Center.
The No. 37-ranked Golden Hurricane (5-3) used a solid effort in doubles action to take a 1-0 lead, and the singles was no different as TU brought home wins in four of the matches to drop the Hornets to 3-4 on the year.
The sophomore duo of Alastair Barnes and Grant Ive fell to Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Marko Starcevic 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, but the back end of the TU lineup took care of business to put the home side ahead 1-0.
At No. 3 doubles, Tulsa brought out a lineup never before seen as the junior duo of Rusty Turpin and Watling teamed up for the first time in their respective careers. The two seasoned veterans clicked instantly and breezed past Jason Smith and Josh Lorentzen 8-5.
Sophomore Marcelo Arevalo and De Klerk just keep winning matches, and Saturday was no different as the duo teamed up at the second position to secure the doubles point with a 9-7 win over Javier Millan and Aliaksandr Malko. Arevalo and De Klerk moved to 5-0 as a tandem.
De Klerk played at No. 3 singles for the first time in his career, and he acted like he had been there before as he had no trouble working Starcevic 6-1, 6-1.
Watling gave TU a 3-0 lead as he defeated Smith 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. Ive gave Tulsa the match victory after defeating Lorentzen 7-5, 6-2 in the sixth position.
Sophomore Tristan Jackson added an insurance point for the Golden Hurricane with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Millan at No. 5 singles.
Barnes fell to Malko 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11) and No. 44-ranked Arevalo was unable to upset No. 16-ranked Harbatsiuk in a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) loss at the top of the lineup.
