Tulsa Defeats Tulane, 62-55, Wins 10th Straight

NEW ORLEANS - Shaquille Harrison led all scorers with 16 points, and Rashad Ray and D'Andre Wright each scored 12 points to lead the Tulsa basketball team to a 62-55 win at Tulane Wednesday evening at Devlin Fieldhouse.

Ray, playing in his hometown, also tallied six rebounds and three steals, as the Golden Hurricane won its 10th straight to improve to 15-5 overall and 8-0 in American Athletic Conference play. TU has now six straight games on the road, and five straight road contests in conference play.

Marquel Curtis tallied a team-high eight rebounds with four points, and Brandon Swannegan put up eight points, three blocks and two steals. Payton Henson and Louis Dabney scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the Green Wave (13-8, 4-5 American).

Tulsa used a 15-7 run in the second half to extend its lead to 16 points, and then withstood a late Tulane rally that cut the lead to five points, to hang on for the win.

The Golden Hurricane went on an 8-0 run at the end of the first half to take a 27-20 lead into the break. Wright hit a pair of free throws to start the second half, and extend the advantage to 29-20. Tulane cut the lead to 29-26 at the 16:29 mark, and with a 31-28 lead, Tulsa scored five straight points with back-to-back dunks by Swannegan and TK Edogi, and moved ahead 36-28.

Leading 40-32, Tulsa held Tulane to just one field goal over four minutes, while it opened up a 9-2 run to extend its advantage to 49-34 with 6:47 left. The lead grew as large as 16 points, 55-39, on a jump shot by Harrison with 3:57 to play in the game.

Dabney then made a 3-pointer to start an 11-0 Tulane run that cut the Tulsa lead to 55-50 with 1:10 remaining. Ray then connected on a pair of free throws to make the score 57-50, and the Hurricane did not let the Green Wave get closer than five points again. Ray hit three more free throws and Harrison knocked down a pair of foul shots to close out the 62-55 victory.

For the game, Tulsa shot 44 percent (20-of-46) from the field, held Tulane to just 36 percent shooting (21-of-59), and outrebounded the Green Wave, 42-31.

Tulsa took an 11-5 lead at the 13:21 mark of the first half after a Wright jumper and a dunk, followed by a Ray free throw. Tulane then used a 9-2 run to take a 14-13 lead on a layup by Osetowksi with 8:35 left in the half. The Hurricane regained the advantage on a Wright layup, and the lead bounced back and forth for the next four minutes.

The Green Wave took a 20-19 lead on a jumper by Stark with 4:05 on the clock. Ray then hit a 3-pointer put the Hurricane ahead, 22-20, and spark an 8-0 run that gave Tulsa a 27-20 lead going into the half. Ray followed a pair of Harrison free throws with another trey to make the score 27-20. TU held Tulane scoreless for the final four minutes of the half.

The Golden Hurricane returns home to play USF at noon Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
