
Hurricane Drop Three Set Contest to First-Place SMU

TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa Volleyball team dropped their match to American Athletic Conference leader SMU in three sets (16-25, 19-25, 22-25) on Wednesday evening at the Reynolds Center. The Hurricane (18-11, 7-10 The American) played their best of the evening in the third and most tightly contested set, but they could not extend the match as SMU pulled away late.
Tulsa found themselves behind to SMU (22-7, 15-2 The American) 8-3 early in the opening frame before the Mustangs eventually stretched their advantage to eight at 14-6. The Hurricane responded with a 5-0 run, eventually pulling with two on an Erica Bohannon kill at 15-13. Bohannon finished with seven kills through the first two sets heading into the break and 10 on the evening. SMU would go on to score 11 of the final 14 points of the set.
Down early again in the second set, TU cut the lead down to two four times during the midpoint of the frame, two times on consecutive sideout kills from Emily Thorson. Down six at one point, TU came within three points of SMU twice down the stretch, but eventually fell 25-19 as they were outhit .319 to .231.
The third set saw 13 ties and two lead changes, the most in any frame of the evening. TU held a one point advantage at 5-4 before eventually falling behind. A Bohannon kill followed by a SMU error knotted the set at 11-11. Neither squad could put together two consecutive points down the stretch after Bohannon and Rachel Moore combined for two straight blocks to knot the set at 17. SMU strung together consecutive points to take a 24-22 advantage before closing out the set.
Rebecca Reeve tallied nine kills and eight digs on the evening while Brooke Berryhill recorded a team-high 17 digs for a Hurricane squad that had 56 on the night.
The Hurricane will close out conference home play at the Reynolds Center on Friday as they will honor their six seniors before the match against the Tigers at 7 p.m.
