NEW ORLEANS — Martins Igbanu just missed out on a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds and Sterling Taplin added another 15 points to help lead Tulsa to a 65-56 win at Tulane on Sunday afternoon at Avron B. Fogelman Arena.
Igbanu went 7-of-12 from the floor for the Golden Hurricane (9-5, 2-0), who has now won five of its last six games, while Taplin scored 13 points in the second half to help the visitors pull away. Junior Etou added 14 points and Curran Scott came off the bench to add 11 points.
Tulsa scored 30 points in the pain and pulled down a season-high 52 rebounds, out-boarding its opponent by at least 20 (52-30) for the third time during the campaign.
Meanwhile, Cameron Reynolds paced the Green Wave (10-4, 1-1) with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Tulane was limited to 35.6-percent shooting and suffered its first home loss of the season.
Tulane erased Tulsa's four-point halftime lead when Reynolds tied the score at 35 early in the second half. However, Igbanu and Etou combined to score 13 of Tulsa's first 15 points in the period and Tulsa went on an 11-2 run after Reynolds' trey to grab a 46-37 cushion.
Etou started the run with a triple after he was left wide open on the win and Jaleel Wheeler capped the spurt with an old-fashioned three-point play.
After the Tulsa big men did much of their damage early in the half, Taplin took over and scored all 13 of his second-half points in the final 9:04. The junior got things started with a three-point play and, after the Green Wave had pulled within 55-51, finished another three-point play with 2:06 to go.
Taplin made five free throws in the final minute and Scott hit two more freebies with just 14 seconds to play that sealed the 65-56 victory, which was the first American Athletic Conference road win for the Hurricane since Feb. 21, 2016.
Tulsa got on the board first by connecting on its first two shots of the day, a layup from Igbanu and a 3-pointer by Corey Henderson Jr., for a quick 5-0 advantage. Tulane would score the next six points and neither team would lead by more than two points until back-to-back buckets from Etou gave the Hurricane a 17-13 cushion with 8:52 to go in the half.
Tulane would answer and took a 20-18 lead, but the Hurricane ripped off a 9-0 run to regain the upper-hand. Igbanu started the run with a layup before two free throws from Scott and another bucket inside by Taplin. Scott then capped the run with a 3-pointer and Tulsa would take a 27-23 advantage to halftime.
Tulsa will return home for a 6 p.m. matchup with UConn (7-6, 0-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the Reynolds Center.
