TULSA, Okla. — Corey Henderson Jr. scored a career-high 30 points and Tulsa hit an American Athletic Conference record 17 3-pointers to defeat UConn, 90-88, in double-overtime on Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Henderson Jr. hit eight of those 17 triples for the Golden Hurricane (10-5, 3-0), who connected on the conference record on the opening night of TU's participation in the Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge, and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds. Martins Igbanu (14 points/10 rebounds) and Junior Etou (10 points/10 rebounds) each notched double-doubles, while freshman Elijah Joiner added a career-high 13 points off the bench.
TU also finished with season highs of 25 free throws made and 53 rebounds. The squad improved to 5-1 in overtime games under head coach Frank Haith as it played its first multi-OT game since a win over Houston on Feb. 16, 2013.
"It was a great, great game," Haith said. "I thought it was a high-level basketball game with a lot of plays made by both teams. It was just a great American Athletic Conference game. I thought our guys showed great toughness and just stayed with it throughout the ball game. There was a lot of ups and downs in both overtimes and regulation but we had a lot of guys make a lot of big plays."
"My teammates were finding me," Henderson said. "From Junior (Etou) and Martins (Igbanu) getting double-teamed, they we're just finding me. (Sterling) Taplin and Eli (Elijah Joiner) were finding me and I was just knocking shots down."
Meanwhile, Jalen Adams fell one assist shy of a triple-double with 29 points and 13 rebounds while playing every minute for the Huskies (7-7, 0-2). Christian Vital had 22 points and Terry Larrier finished with 19.
Tulsa led for most of the first two periods, but Larrier's jumper with 3:01 left in regulation gave UConn a 68-66 lead and a three-point play by Adams pushed the UConn advantage to 73-69 with just 57 seconds left.
Henderson Jr. made two 3-pointers in the final 40 seconds, including one with just 4.2 second left to tie the game at 75 and send the contest to overtime.
In the first overtime, UConn led 79-78 and had the ball with 12 seconds left, but Taplin got a hand on the inbounds pass and Joiner came up with the loose ball. The freshman was fouled on a layup attempt and made one-of-two free throws. Vital missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the game went to a second overtime.
With 3:26 left in the second overtime Etou drained the team's 17th 3-pointer of the night to give the Hurricane the lead, 84-82, and it would not trail again.
The Huskies pulled within one after a pair of Adams freebies with 1:06 to go and then on a layup by the junior with 13 ticks remaining. Each time, the Hurricane answered at the free-throw line and Taplin's freebie with 10 seconds left put the home squad ahead, 90-88.
TU held its ground as the Huskies missed three shots before the final buzzer sounded on the 90-88 win that kept the Hurricane unbeaten in conference action.
Henderson Jr. hit five triples in the first half en route to 17 points. Tulsa hit 10 of its 13 buckets during the half behind the arc to pull away from the Huskies near the end of a tight first half.
After UConn took an 11-8 lead, TU went on a quick 6-0 spurt and held the lead for much of the rest of the half. The Huskies tied the score at 16 with 11:30 to go, but Tulsa would make seven shots—all behind the arc—the rest of the half to regain the lead and take a 42-36 cushion to halftime.
Geno Artison started the run of triples with one of his two 3s in the half. Sterling Taplin and Joiner also connected from deep before Henderson Jr. hit back-to-back treys that gave the Hurricane its largest lead, 42-33.
Tulsa will be back in action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, when it will head back on the road for a matchup at Memphis (9-5, 0-1).
