HOUSTON — Martins Igbanu scored a career-high 27 points for Tulsa, but Houston hit an American Athletic Conference record 18 3-pointers en route to a 104-72 win over the visiting Golden Hurricane on Thursday night at H&PE Arena.
Igbanu shot 8-of-13 from the floor and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for the Golden Hurricane (10-7, 3-2). The sophomore also pulled down five rebounds and had an assist in 30 minutes of action. DaQuan Jeffries got his first start since returning from a hand injury and added 11 points for his first game in double-figures since Nov. 25.
Meanwhile, Gray scored a game-high 34 points and went 5-of-8 from behind the arc to pace the Cougars (13-3, 3-1). Armoni Brooks also hit five triples on his way to 15 points for Houston, which shot 55.2-percent from the field and 52.9-percent behind the arc.
Gray scored 22 of his 34 points in the first half and Houston went 13-for-18 behind the 3-point line in the first 20 minutes to grab the upper-hand. The senior scored 10 of the Cougars' first 12 points and Jeffries hit a 3-pointer for TU to knot the game at 15 with 15:15 left in the half.
However, Tulsa went cold and the Cougars stayed hot from behind the arc to rattle off a 21-3 run for a 36-18 cushion and the home squad would take a 59-32 lead to halftime.
Igbanu scored 17 of his career-high total in the second half, but Tulsa could get no closer than 22 in the final period as Houston recorded the 104-71 win.
Tulsa will return home for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 13 against No. 5 Wichita State (13-2, 3-0) at the Reynolds Center in the first-ever Havoc in the Heartland men's basketball game.
