Golden Hurricane Storms Past Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Tulsa women's tennis team collected its second straight win in the state of Tennessee. The Golden Hurricane (7-2) were led by Ksenia Laskutova and Martina Okalova, who both collected a singles and doubles match victory, as TU defeated Middle Tennessee (5-3), 4-1.
Laskutova and Martha Matoula defeated Kim Kermet and Luisa Zirilli in the No. 1 doubles match, 7-5. In the No. 2 doubles match, Okalova and Vera Ploner knocked off Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows, 6-3. The Hurricane held a 1-0 lead after doubles play.
Laskutova faced Josefina Zehnder in the No. 1 singles match. Laskutova breezed through the first set, 6-2, before taking the second with the same score. Laskutova put TU up, 2-0.
Zani Barnard knocked off Tulsa's Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg at the No. 6 singles position, 6-3 and 6-2. Middle Tennessee pulled within one, 2-1.
The No. 122 ranked singles player, Okalova, faced Magazzini in the No. 2 singles match. Okalova took the first stanza, 6-1. Okalova continued her success as she won the second set, 6-2. Okalova put Tulsa on top, 3-1.
At the No. 4 position, Tamara Kupkova faced Zirilli. In the first frame the two would need a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker Kupkova pulled away and won, 7-1, and won the first set, 7-6. In the second, Kupkova managed to break Zirilli's serve and took the second set, 6-4. Kupkova's victory clinched the match victory for Tulsa, 4-1.
The Golden Hurricane improves to 7-2 on the season. Tulsa returns to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 10, as it travels to Waco, Texas, for a matchup with the No. 16 Baylor Bears.
