MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team fell to host and No. 21 Marquette, 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 18-25), in its final match of the Marquette Invitational on Saturday.
The Golden Hurricane saw production from Maggie Hembree, leading to a 5-0 run in the first set. Tulsa would eventually tie it up at 15-all, but ultimately dropped the hard-fought frame, 25-23. Despite the set, Hembree showed she was a force at the net, adding three blocks and two kills.
In the second stanza, Tulsa got off to a hot start, going up 8-4 in the first half of the set. Despite the start, Marquette would go on to take the set, 25-20. Rachel Moore led the offensive attack for the Golden Hurricane in the frame, accumulating five kills on a .357 hitting percentage.
Moore continued her strong second set into set three, posting a perfect two kills on two attempts, to go along with a service ace. A Marquette rally late in the frame would clinch the match for the Golden Eagles, 25-18. Freshman Hannah Overmyer also made her presence felt offensively in the third stanza, striking three kills on five attacks.
Moore and Thorson nearly recorded double-doubles in the match, as each tallied nine kills to go along with nine and eight digs, respectively. Taylor Horsfall accrued 20 digs in the loss, while Hembree tied her season-high with five blocks. Horsfall would be named to the all-tournament team after recording 50 digs on the weekend.
Tulsa is set to begin conference play next weekend, hosting Memphis on Friday, Sept. 21 and Tulane on Sunday, Sept. 23 in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
