Tulsa Women’s Tennis Goes Perfect at Hurricane Invite

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 22 University of Tulsa women's tennis team (3-0) wrapped up the Hurricane Invite on Sunday, taking wins over ORU, 6-0, and Wyoming, 7-0, inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Tulsa 7, Wyoming 0
Tulsa pushed to 3-0 on the season, defeating Wyoming, 7-0, in the team's final match of the Hurricane Invite at the Case Tennis Center.
In doubles, No. 4 Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner resumed as one of the nation's best doubles tandems, blanking Wyoming's Tessa van Der Ploeg and Elisa Koonik, 6-0. Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe also picked up a 6-2 win over Wyoming's Ida Krause/Mihaela Kaftanova, followed by a Manon Meulenberg/Marina Davtyan 6-2 victory over Maria Oreshkina and Ana Royo to clinch the doubles point for the Golden Hurricane.
In singles, Matoula was the first to finish for Tulsa, handling Koonik, 6-0, 6-2. Not long after, Ploner battled Oreshkina to a 6-1, 6-4 victory. At the No. 1 spot, Okalova and van Der Ploeg fought in a tight second set, but Okalova defeated the Cowgirl in straight frames, 6-2, 7-6(2).
At the No. 4 spot, Poppe managed to knock off the Cowgirls' Royo to push Tulsa to a 5-0 lead in the match. Hopton and Capogrosso would go to three sets each, but Hopton took down Kaftanova, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, while Capogrosso would be the last to finish, edging out Krause, 6(5)-7, 6-3, 10-6.
Tulsa Doubles vs. ORU
After finishing singles a perfect 5-0 on Saturday, head coach Orford's bunch resumed the duel with doubles on Sunday morning, finishing a flawless 3-0 in the matches as well.
To start, No. 4 Okalova and Ploner defeated ORU's one doubles, Kadijevic/Cornelius in straight games, 6-0. Matoula and Poppe finished second in the two spot, taking down Antonijevic and Gutierrez, 6-1. To finish the duel for Tulsa, the freshmen duo of Meulenberg and Davtyan managed a 6-1 victory over Gisbert and Vasiljevic to round out the match.
Orford's squad will get a few days to rest, as the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (0-1) come to Tulsa on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a Sunday doubleheader against Arkansas Pine-Bluff at 9 a.m. and crosstown rivals ORU at 1 p.m. CT.
