Hopton Competes in Singles Main Draw at ITA Central Regional Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - Sophomore Megan Hopton competed in the singles qualifying draw on day one of the 2019 ITA Central Regional Championships. The championships, which are being hosted by Oklahoma and played at the Headington Family Tennis Center, feature 30 teams from across the region.
Hopton (2-1) won her first round match, defeating Oklahoma State's Ryan Thompson in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. She would go onto face Kansas City's Riddhi Sharma in the second round. Sharma won the opening set 6-0, but Hopton bounced back in the second set. She came from behind to win in a tiebreak, 7-6(1). Hopton would fall in the third-set tiebreaker, 1-0[8].
The remaining six TU players are set to compete on Friday in the main draw.
Seniors Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner are seeded fourth and 16th, respectively. The top 32 seeds all receive a first round bye. Junior Shura Poppe and freshman Laia Conde Monfort each had to await their opponents from the qualifying round. Conde Monfort is scheduled to play at 10 a.m. vs. Ivana Babic of Oral Roberts, followed by Poppe at 11 a.m. against Iowa's Danielle Burich. Sophomore Marina Davtyan is set to play Minnesota's Tiffany Huber in her opening round match at 10 a.m. Freshman Lian Benedejcic will square off against Iowa's Michelle Bacalla at 11 a.m.
The Golden Hurricane have entered three doubles teams in the main draw. Okalova and Ploner are the top seed in the draw, and are set to play at 8 a.m. against Arkansas State's Bera Masdevall Masip and Pornpawee Pramethong. Davtyan and Poppe are also scheduled to play at 8 a.m., as the duo takes on 12th-seeded Cammy Frei and Ekin Ercetin from Minnesota. Hopton and Conde Monfort will play Iowa's Bacalla and Ashleigh Jacobs at 9 a.m.
