Golden Hurricane Compete in Qualifying Draws

TULSA, Okla. -- Members of the Tulsa women's tennis team competed in the singles and doubles qualifying draws on Monday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Women's All-American Championships. The women's qualifying draws are being played at the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park.
Junior Shura Poppe and sophomore Marina Davtyan both saw their first glimpse of tournament action in singles play.
Davtyan faced William & Mary senior Natalia Perry. The two were neck-and-neck in the first set, with the upperclassman holding on, 7-6(2). Perry would carry the momentum into the second set and won, 6-2.
Poppe squared off against No. 59 Jaeda Daniel, a junior at NC State. She would fall to Daniel 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Megan Hopton and freshman Lian Benedejcic played Wake Forest sophomores Anna Brylin and Saby Nihalani in the doubles qualifying draw. The Deacon tandem went onto defeat the Golden Hurricane 8-3.
The Golden Hurricane would later compete in a consolation round match vs. No. 56 Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Toran Ribes of Kansas. The Jayhawks would win 8-4.
Consolation round matches on Tuesday are as follows:
Marina Davtyan vs. No. 55 Tatum Rice (Arkansas) - 8:30 a.m.
Shura Poppe vs. Ena Babic (Purdue) -- 8:30 a.m.
