Tulsa Women’s Tennis Tops Mean Green on Saturday, 6-1

DALLAS, Texas. – In a weather delayed neutral-site match, the Golden Hurricane (12-8) defeated North Texas (9-8) at the SMU Tennis Complex on Saturday, 6-1.
Tulsa claimed a back-and-forth doubles point, as Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe struck first at the No. 2 spot, winning a convincing 6-2. To give TU the 1-0 advantage into singles, No.15-ranked Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner claimed a 7-6(4) victory over No. 44 Tamuna Kutubidze/Maria Kononova
Marina Davtyan and Megan Hopton also earned a 7-6(6) win at the No. 3 position to sweep doubles for Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane maintained that momentum into singles, winning all six first sets of the solo matches. Matoula pushed Tulsa ahead by two, as North Texas' Kononova retired after Matoula was ahead 6-2, 3-0.
Shortly after, Ploner and Davtyan notched straight-set victories at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively, to clinch the match for the Golden Hurricane.
In the remaining singles matches, No. 98 Okalova took down North Texas' No. 79-ranked Kutubidze in straight frames, 6-3, 6-2. Poppe followed suit with a 6-4, 0-6, 10-5 victory to push the Tulsa lead to 6-0.
Hopton fell in the final match of the afternoon, dropping a hard-fought match to Minying Liang, 3-6, 6-2, 13-11. Despite the loss, Hopton remains 4-2 at the No. 4 position this season for Tulsa.
TU gets little time to rest, staying in Dallas, Texas, for a 12 p.m. conference match with SMU tomorrow at the SMU Tennis Complex.
