ORLANDO, Fla. – Tulsa women's tennis junior duo of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner will square off with Miami's Daevenia Achong and Daniella Roldan at the NCAA Women's Doubles Championships on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. CT, scheduled for May 21-25 at the USTA National Campus.
The Miami duo was ranked one slot ahead of Okalova and Ploner in the latest Oracle ITA doubles ranking, earning a 13th overall nod. Achong and Roldan are both making their first career appearances in an NCAA individual championship.
The event, scheduled to run from Tuesday-Saturday in the Sunshine State, will feature one round of the prestigious tournament each day. The singles and doubles finals will conclude the NCAA Championships on Saturday, May 25.
Ploner and Okalova's appearance will mark just the third in TU history at the prestigious doubles tournament. Tulsa's Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique fell in the round of 16 in 2013, while Jennifer DeSpain and All-American Anousjka van Exel lost in the second round in 1999.
The Golden Hurricane duo earned one of nine automatic bids into the tournament with a strong performance in their junior seasons. Tulsa's No. 1 tandem has had a standout 2018-19 campaign under head coach Dean Orford, picking up a 27-6 overall record and a 15-4 mark in dual matches.
In the dual season, Okalova and Ploner earned four victories over ranked opponents in doubles matches, with their highest coming against UCF's No. 19 Valeryia Zeleva/Ksenia Kuznetsova in the American Athletic Conference tournament.
In the fall, the doubles team followed in Vickers and Enrique's footsteps, nabbing an ITA Central Regional doubles title in October. The achievement marked the fourth duo to achieve the feat in program history and the first since Enrique and Vickers in 2012.
The 2019 NCAA Men's and Women's Singles/Doubles Championships will air live on the Tennis Channel throughout each day of competition, as the men's and women's individual singles tournaments in Orlando will each feature 64 players, with 32 doubles pairs comprising both the men's and women's doubles tournaments.
