
Golden Hurricane Fall to North Texas on Day Two of North Texas Invite

DENTON, Texas – The Tulsa volleyball team fell to North Texas in their final match of the North Texas Invite on Saturday, 3-1 (18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 23-25). The Golden Hurricane now stand at 1-2 overall, while the Mean Green improve to 2-1 on the season.
Saturday's contest also marked the first meeting between the two programs since taking the court in the first round of the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
Coming out of halftime trailing 2-0, the Golden Hurricane quickly shifted the momentum their way. TU would use a 4-0 run to expand a 6-5 advantage to 10-5 in the third set. Following a service error, Junior Callie Cook tacked on the next three points for Tulsa. Seniors Taylor Horsfall and Mariah Pardo each setup Cook for two of her kills, while the third came from a solo block.
North Texas would later cut the deficit to one point at 17-16, but the Golden Hurricane secured the following three points. Freshman Dilara Gedikoglu got a kill off an assist from Pardo. Cook and Aysu Dalogullari each tallied a block assist, followed by Gedikoglu setting up Pardo for a point.
TU ended the set by securing four of the final five points. That cut the Mean Green lead in half, 2-1.
In the fourth set, Tulsa trailed by as much as four points on three occasions early on. But a 7-0 run helped the Golden Hurricane turn a 10-6 deficit into a 13-10 advantage. During the run, North Texas committed six errors. Dalogullari and Maggie Hembree were each credited with a block assist, while Roosa Rautio recorded a service ace and setup Maddie Rhoder for a kill.
TU led by as much as four points late in the set, 22-18. However, UNT used a 6-0 run, including seven of the final eight points in the fourth set to win the match.
North Texas edged the Golden Hurricane in total kills, 58-53, in assists, 53-49, and in digs, 64-58. Tulsa had a 3-2 advantage in service aces.
Horsfall was named to the All-Tournament team. Against UNT, she led all players with 22 digs and recorded eight assists.
Gedikoglu finished the match with a double-double. She led the team with 11 kills and chipped in 10 digs. Cook also produced double-digit kills with 10, while adding three blocks.
Pardo recorded a team-high 21 assists, followed by Rautio with 16. Hembree added five block assists and Rhoder added three.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action on Friday, Sept. 6, as they head to Kansas City for the KC Roo's Klassic. Tulsa will start the two-day invitational playing South Dakota at 10:30 a.m., followed by LA Tech at 4:30 p.m.
