Golden Hurricane Top Crosstown Rival Oral Roberts in Four Sets

TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa volleyball team defeated crosstown rival Oral Roberts on Wednesday night in four sets, [22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 27-25]. With the win, the Golden Hurricane (4-3) have won their last three matches, including 12 straight against the Golden Eagles (4-5).

While the Golden Hurricane prevailed in four sets, the match was tight in each set. The two teams combined for 47 ties and 18 lead changes. Three of the four sets had double-digit ties.

Oral Roberts would win the first, but it was also Tulsa from there. Trailing 19-18 in the second set, the Golden Hurricane would finish the game on a 7-1 run.

Callie Cook tied the match at 19-19 on a pass from Rossa Rautio. Cook and Maddie Rhoder would each then tally a block assist, followed by Rautio setting up Dilara Gedikoglu with her fifth kill of the set. Following an ORU timeout, TU would go on top, 24-19, thanks to back-to-back kills from Rhoder and Cook. The set ended with a Golden Eagle attacking error and Hannah Overmyer securing set point with a service ace.

Tulsa finished the second set with a .326 attacking percentage, compared to a .220 clip for Oral Roberts.

In the third set, no team led by more than four points on two occasions.

TU and ORU would be knotted at 20-20, before a 4-0 spurt put the Golden Hurricane in position to take its first set lead of the contest. Gedkioglu would tally two of her five third-set kills during the run, while also capturing set point off a Mariah Pardo pass. Kayley Cassaday registered the fourth kill of the run and tacked on a block assist with Maggie Hembree.

Neither team budged in the fourth set, as each team exchanged leads from 13-13 to 22-22.

A Rautio service ace and Golden Eagle attacking error would once again put Tulsa within match point. However, ORU would take the two next points, tying the set for the 11th time.

The sophomore setter had the assist on a Gedikoglu kill. That shifted the advantage back to Tulsa at 26-25. Oral Roberts would commit an attacking error on the next play to end the match.

Both teams had a great offensive performance in the final set. Tulsa attacked with a .412 clip with 17 kills, three errors, and 34 total attacks. Oral Roberts posted a .457 attacking percentage, totaling 20 kills, four errors, and 35 total attacks.

For the match, Tulsa had 63 kills, 21 errors, and 162 total attacks for a .259 attacking percentage. The Golden Eagles finished with 59 kills, 20 errors, and 153 total attacks on a .255 clip.

Tulsa led in assists, 61-56, in total blocks, 9-7.5, and dominated in service aces, 7-2. Oral Roberts had a 73-62 advantage in digs.

Gedikoglu nearly recorded a double-double. The freshman finished tied for the game-high in kills with 20, to go with nine digs. Taylor Horsfall was also tied for the match-high in digs with 25.

Cook finished with 12 kills, just one shy of tying her career-high. The junior middle blocker also combined for one solo block and six block assists. Cassaday finished with double-figure kills for the first time this season with 12.

Pardo led TU in assists with 32, followed by Rautio with 26. Overmyer chipped in nine digs. Rhoder had four block assists and Hembree recorded one solo block and one block assist.

Tulsa returns to the Donald W. Reynolds Center for the first time this season on Friday, Sept. 13 at 12 noon vs. Houston Baptist on day one of the Tulsa Invitational.
